The Yoga of the Cosmic Form
55 verses
The supreme secret dissolves delusion - not by force, but by the grace of words spoken from love.
From the lotus-eyed Lord, Arjuna has heard the secret of creation and dissolution - but hearing is not yet seeing.
You are as You describe Yourself - now let me SEE what I believe.
If You think I am capable - not my assessment, but Yours - then show me the imperishable You.
The request is granted instantly - Behold not one form but hundreds, thousands, in infinite divine variety.
See the entire Vedic pantheon alive within Me - and wonders no eye has ever witnessed.
The entire cosmos - all that moves and all that stands still - exists here, now, unified within My body.
The finite cannot perceive the Infinite through its own instruments - grace must gift the capacity to see.
The narrator returns - confirming that what follows is not imagination but witnessed reality transmitted across space and time.
The description begins: countless faces and eyes, innumerable wonders - infinity cannot be counted, only witnessed in overwhelming multiplicity.
The senses overflow: sight sees garlands without end, smell dissolves in infinite fragrance, and everywhere one turns - a face, watching, waiting.
If a thousand suns rose simultaneously in the sky - even that brilliance would fall short of what Arjuna now witnessed.
The many IS the One: Arjuna saw all separation as simultaneous unity - the entire cosmos gathered in a single divine body.
The body speaks before the mind can: hair standing on end, head bowing involuntarily - Arjuna's response to infinity is beyond words yet becomes words.
In one body, Arjuna beholds the entire universe - every god, every creature, every sage - revealing that the Divine is not separate from creation but contains all existence within itself.
Infinity has no edges - Arjuna searches for where the cosmic form begins, centers, or ends, and finds nothing but endless expansiveness in every direction.
The cosmic form blazes with the radiance of a thousand simultaneous suns - a brilliance so intense that even divine eyes struggle to behold it directly.
Arjuna's mind crystallizes what vision reveals - this blazing form is the imperishable goal of all seeking, the treasury where the entire universe rests, the eternal guardian of dharma itself.
Sun and moon are merely the eyes of this cosmic form - a being whose own radiance heats the entire universe, whose power knows no limit, whose arms reach everywhere.
The entire space between heaven and earth - every direction - is filled by You alone; and seeing this terrible wonder, all three worlds tremble.
The gods themselves enter into You; some, terrified, praise You with palms joined; great sages and perfected beings cry 'Svasti!' and glorify You with abundant hymns.
Every celestial being in existence - from storm gods to demons to perfected sages - stands frozen in astonishment before the cosmic form.
Infinity takes form as countless mouths, eyes, arms, and terrible fangs - and all worlds tremble before it, including Arjuna himself.
Touching the sky, blazing with infinite colors, mouths gaping wide - Arjuna's inner self trembles, finding neither courage nor peace.
Before mouths blazing like the fire of cosmic dissolution, Arjuna loses all orientation - not knowing directions, finding no shelter, he cries for mercy.
All the Kauravas, all the kings, Bhishma, Drona, Karna - and even the Pandava warriors - Arjuna sees them all rushing into the terrible mouths.
Warriors rush headlong into terrible fanged mouths - some caught between the teeth, heads crushed to powder.
As countless river torrents rush inevitably toward the sea, so do all the heroes of the world flow into Your blazing mouths - pulled by cosmic gravity toward their source.
Like moths rushing helplessly into a blazing fire, all beings hurtle into Your cosmic mouths - compelled by forces beyond their understanding toward their own annihilation.
With flaming mouths You lick and devour all worlds from every direction, while Your fierce radiance fills the entire universe with scorching fire - O all-pervading Vishnu!
Arjuna's desperate question pierces the cosmic vision: 'Who are You in this terrible form? Be gracious to me! I want to understand You, the Primeval One, for I cannot comprehend Your purpose.'
THE MOST FAMOUS VERSE: 'I am Time, the mighty destroyer of worlds, here engaged in annihilation. Even without you, all these warriors arrayed in the opposing armies shall cease to exist.'
Krishna's commanding call: 'Therefore arise! Win glory! These enemies are already slain by Me - be merely My instrument, O ambidextrous archer!'
Krishna names the impossible targets - Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna - and declares: 'They are already slain by Me. Kill them without distress. Fight! You will conquer.'
Sanjaya witnesses the transformation: Arjuna the crowned warrior stands trembling, palms joined, voice choking, bowing again and again in fear before the terrible revelation of his divine friend.
It is fitting that the world rejoices and becomes devoted to Your glory - demons flee in terror while perfected beings bow in reverence. You evoke both love and fear, each response perfectly appropriate.
Why should they not bow to You, O Great Soul - You who are greater than even Brahma the creator? You are the imperishable ground from which existence and non-existence emerge, and the supreme beyond both.
You are both the eternal knower and the ultimate object of knowledge - the consciousness that seeks and the truth that is sought. The universe is pervaded by You, O Infinite Form, as both its hidden treasure and final resting place.
You are Wind, Death, Fire, Water, Moon, and the First Ancestor. A thousand salutations are not enough - again and again and yet again I bow to You!
Salutations from before and behind, from all sides - O Everything! Your infinite power pervades all; therefore You ARE all. There is no direction from which to bow that is not already You.
Whatever I said rashly, thinking You merely a friend - 'O Krishna! O Yadava! O Friend!' - not knowing Your true majesty, whether from carelessness or from love... forgive me.
Whatever dishonor I showed You in jest - while relaxing, lying in bed, sitting, eating - whether alone or before others - O Infallible One, I beg forgiveness from You, the Immeasurable.
You are the Father of all creation, the most venerable Guru - none equals You in the three worlds, much less exceeds You.
Prostrating fully, I beg Your grace - please bear with my offenses as a father with a son, a friend with a friend, a lover with the beloved.
I am thrilled having seen the unprecedented, yet my mind trembles with fear - please be gracious and show me that familiar form, O refuge of the universe.
I wish to see You crowned, holding mace and discus - please assume that four-armed form, O thousand-armed embodiment of the cosmos.
Krishna: Being pleased with you, I have shown you My supreme, radiant, infinite, primeval form by My own power - never before seen by anyone other than you.
Not by Vedic study, sacrifices, charity, rituals, or fierce austerities can this form be seen by any human other than you, O Arjuna.
Let there be no distress or bewilderment from seeing My terrible form - with fear dispelled and heart gladdened, behold again that very form you love.
The cosmic terror dissolves as Mahātmā Krishna withdraws His overwhelming form and returns to His familiar, gentle appearance - the friend becomes friend again, calming Arjuna's trembling heart.
The storm passes - Arjuna breathes again. Seeing Krishna's human form, he finds his scattered self returning, his mind settling like disturbed water becoming clear.
Krishna reveals the rarity of what Arjuna received: even the gods eternally yearn for this vision that Arjuna was freely granted through friendship and devotion.
The four pillars of traditional religion - scripture, austerity, charity, and ritual - cannot purchase this vision. What Arjuna saw comes through a door that accomplishment cannot unlock.
The supreme secret finally revealed: undivided devotion - bhakti without a second - is the only key that unlocks knowledge, vision, and ultimate union with the Divine.
The chapter's final teaching distilled to essence: work for Me, aim for Me, love Me, release attachment, hold no hatred - and you will reach Me. The path of bhakti in five qualities.
