Vishvarupa Darshana Yoga

कस्माच्च ते न नमेरन्महात्मन् गरीयसे ब्रह्मणोऽप्यादिकर्त्रे । अनन्त देवेश जगन्निवास त्वमक्षरं सदसत्तत्परं यत् ॥

kasmāc ca te na nameran mahātman garīyase brahmaṇo 'py ādi-kartre | ananta deveśa jagan-nivāsa tvam akṣaraṁ sad-asat tat paraṁ yat ||

In essence: Why should they not bow to You, O Great Soul - You who are greater than even Brahma the creator? You are the imperishable ground from which existence and non-existence emerge, and the supreme beyond both.

Sadhak: "How can something be beyond both existence and non-existence? That seems logically impossible."

Guru: "Logic operates within existence. It presumes being. Can logic examine its own precondition?"

Sadhak: "I suppose not. Logic requires something to exist first."

Guru: "Exactly. 'Sat' - existence - and 'asat' - non-existence - are both concepts, both require consciousness to conceive them. What is the consciousness that conceives both?"

Sadhak: "It would have to be prior to both... but then what is it?"

Guru: "'Tat param' - that beyond. It cannot be named without reducing it to a concept, which would place it within existence again. Hence 'tat' - simply 'that.'"

Sadhak: "Why does Arjuna say Krishna is greater than Brahma? Isn't Brahma the supreme creator in Hindu tradition?"

Guru: "Brahma creates within a framework. Where did the framework come from? Who established the laws by which Brahma creates? The ādi-kartā - primal creator - precedes even the creator of this universe. Brahma is great; his source is greater."

Sadhak: "So this verse establishes that Krishna is not just a deity among deities..."

Guru: "But the source and ground of all deities, all existence, all non-existence, and the mystery beyond both. This is why 'kasmāt na nameran' - how could any being not bow?"

🌅 Morning

Hierarchy contemplation: Begin the day by mentally tracing causation backward. Who made you? Parents. Who made them? Their parents. Keep tracing: ancestors, first humans, evolution, planet formation, cosmic origins, the Big Bang, and then... what? Sit with the mystery of ādi-kartā - the primal cause beyond causes. This practice relativizes all worldly hierarchies.

☀️ Daytime

Jagan-nivāsa awareness: Throughout the day, practice the reversal of perception. Instead of seeing yourself moving through space, sense that space (and everything in it) exists within something vaster. You are not in the universe; the universe, including you, is in the Divine dwelling. Let this shift how you relate to apparent limits.

🌙 Evening

Sat-asat meditation: Before sleep, contemplate the states of consciousness. Waking - sat, existence clearly felt. Dream - neither clearly sat nor asat. Deep sleep - approaching asat yet something witnesses the absence. What is that witness? Rest into 'tat param' - that beyond - as you release into sleep.

Common Questions

Is this verse claiming Krishna is superior to other Hindu gods like Brahma?
Yes, but not in a competitive sense. The verse establishes ontological priority - Krishna as the source from which even the creator-god emerged. It's not that Brahma is diminished but that the chain of causation is traced to its ultimate origin. In many Hindu traditions, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are seen as aspects or emanations of one supreme reality; here that reality is identified with Krishna's cosmic form.
What does 'jagan-nivāsa' - abode of the universe - mean practically?
The universe doesn't exist somewhere else while Krishna exists elsewhere - the universe dwells within Him. Space itself is within the Divine, not the other way around. This reverses our normal perception: we think we live in a universe containing God; actually, the universe lives in God. We are inside the abode, not looking for the abode from outside.
How can something be both existence (sat) and non-existence (asat)?
The verse says Krishna is sat, asat, AND tat param - the beyond. This doesn't mean simultaneously existing and not-existing (a contradiction) but being the ground from which both emerge. Think of deep sleep: are you existing or not-existing? You're not conscious of existence, yet something continues. The ground of being precedes and enables both states.
