Soma - The Divine Drink of Immortality

Rig Veda, Mandala IX (entire mandala)

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, what if I told you there was once a drink that made gods immortal?"

Guddu: "Like amrita from the churning of the ocean?"

Dadi: "Similar, but different. This drink was called Soma, and it was so important that one of the oldest books in our scriptures - the Rigveda - has an entire section of 114 hymns dedicated to it!"

Guddu: "114 hymns about a drink?! It must have been really special!"

Dadi: "The ancients believed drinking Soma made you immortal. There's a famous verse that says: 'We have drunk the Soma; we have become immortal; we have gone to the light; we have found the gods.'"

Guddu: "What was in it?"

Dadi: "That's the great mystery, beta! No one today knows exactly what plant Soma came from. The ancient descriptions say it was brown, grew in the mountains, and had no flowers, leaves, or roots like normal plants."

Guddu: "How did they make it?"

Dadi: "The Vedic texts describe the preparation carefully. They would press the stalks of the Soma plant between stones, filter the juice through sheep's wool, then mix it with water and milk. First, they offered it to the gods. Then the priests and the person doing the sacrifice would drink what remained."

Guddu: "And it made them immortal?"

Dadi: "They believed it did! They said it healed the sick, cheered the sad, strengthened the weak, and removed fear. It gave intelligence, creativity, and a feeling of connection to the divine."

Guddu: "Like a magic potion!"

Dadi: "The most important god who loved Soma was Indra. He would drink enormous amounts before his battles against demons. When he fought the serpent demon Vritra, the stories say he drank lakes of Soma to gain strength."

Guddu: "Was Soma just a drink, or was it also a god?"

Dadi: "Both! Soma was personified as a god with three main powers: he was master of all plants and vegetation, he was a healer who could cure diseases, and he brought prosperity and wealth."

Guddu: "Where did Soma come from?"

Dadi: "According to myth, it originated in heaven. One story says an eagle stole it from the gods and brought it to earth. Another says the gods gave it to a celestial archer to protect, but Agni the fire-god stole it and gave it to humans."

Guddu: "The fire-god was a thief?"

Dadi: "*chuckling* He thought humans deserved access to immortality too! But here's something interesting - later, Soma became identified with the Moon."

Guddu: "The Moon?!"

Dadi: "Yes! People started believing that Soma - the drink of immortality - was stored inside the Moon. That's why the moon wanes each month - the gods are drinking the Soma! And then it fills up again."

Guddu: "So when we see the moon shrinking, gods are having a drink?"

Dadi: "According to the old stories! In later mythology, Soma the Moon god had many adventures. He had thirty-three wives - all daughters of Daksha - but he loved only one named Rohini and ignored the others."

Guddu: "That doesn't sound fair."

Dadi: "It wasn't, and he was punished for it. Daksha cursed him with consumption - that's why he wanes and weakens. But because Soma sought Lord Shiva's help, the curse was modified so he could regain his strength during the bright half of the month."

Guddu: "Dadi, if no one knows what the plant was, is Soma lost forever?"

Dadi: "The physical drink, probably yes. People have guessed many plants - certain mushrooms, various mountain herbs - but no one is certain. The practice died out long, long ago."

Guddu: "That's sad. We lost the drink of immortality."

Dadi: "Or maybe... maybe we never needed the actual drink. Think about what Soma represented, beta. The desire to transcend ordinary life. The wish to connect with the divine. The hope for healing and wisdom."

Guddu: "Those desires are still there."

Dadi: "Exactly! And we have our own ways to experience them - through meditation, through prayer, through helping others, through moments of beauty that take our breath away. Perhaps Soma wasn't really about a physical drink at all. Perhaps it was about the state of consciousness the drink helped achieve."

Guddu: "And we can reach that state without the drink?"

Dadi: "The great sages said yes. When you sit quietly and feel completely at peace, when you help someone and feel pure joy, when you look at stars and feel connected to something vast - those are moments of tasting Soma."

Guddu: "*smiling* So the drink of immortality is... a feeling?"

Dadi: "The best kind of drink is one you carry inside you, beta. Now sleep, and may you taste the Soma of peaceful dreams."

Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi. May the Moon refill tonight!"

Dadi: "*laughing* May it shine bright for you. Goodnight, my curious one."
