Jalandhara Vadh

Shiva Purana

Dadi: "Guddu, do you know what makes someone truly invincible?"

Guddu: "Strong muscles? Superpowers?"

Dadi: "What about the faithfulness of the person who loves them most?"

Guddu: "Huh?"

Dadi: "There was once a demon named Jalandhara who couldn't be killed by anyone - not because of his own power, but because of his wife Vrinda's perfect faithfulness. Her purity created a shield around him that nothing could pierce."

Guddu: "His wife's love protected him?!"

Dadi: "Let me start from the beginning. Jalandhara was born from fire from Shiva's third eye when Indra angered him. This fire met the ocean and became a baby - a powerful, angry baby who grabbed Brahma by the neck and shook him!"

Guddu: "A baby shook Brahma?!"

Dadi: "That's how strong he was from birth. Brahma gave him a blessing: he would grow instantly strong, conquer the world, and only Shiva could kill him. He also got a perfectly faithful wife named Vrinda."

Guddu: "Sounds like everything went his way!"

Dadi: "He conquered heaven, earth, and the underworld. He defeated the gods again and again. Not even Vishnu could beat him in battle because Vrinda's faithfulness made him invincible."

Guddu: "So what happened?"

Dadi: "Jalandhara made a terrible mistake. He heard how beautiful Goddess Parvati was and demanded that Shiva hand her over to him!"

Guddu: "He wanted Shiva's wife?!"

Dadi: "Shiva refused, of course. War broke out. But here's the problem: as long as Vrinda remained faithful, Jalandhara couldn't be killed."

Guddu: "So what could they do?"

Dadi: "*(voice becoming serious)* This is where the story becomes complicated, beta. Parvati asked Vishnu to somehow break Vrinda's faithfulness. Vishnu disguised himself as Jalandhara and appeared to Vrinda..."

Guddu: "That's... that's not right!"

Dadi: "Vrinda was tricked. She believed it was her husband. When she discovered the deception, her faithfulness was broken - and with it, Jalandhara's protection."

Guddu: "What did she do?"

Dadi: "Vrinda was devastated. She cursed Vishnu: "Because you did this, in a future life, your wife will be stolen by demons and you'll suffer the same pain." This curse came true when Ravana kidnapped Sita in the Ramayana!"

Guddu: "The Ramayana happened because of this curse?!"

Dadi: "That's how connected these stories are, beta. Vrinda then threw herself into fire, unable to bear what had happened."

Guddu: "This story is so sad, Dadi."

Dadi: "Very sad. But there's more. With Vrinda's protection gone, Shiva finally defeated Jalandhara in a great battle, killing him with his trident."

Guddu: "What's the lesson here? It seems unfair to everyone."

Dadi: "*(thoughtfully)* It's a difficult story with many layers. One lesson: even great power built on good foundations can crumble if that foundation is destroyed. Jalandhara's strength came from his wife's virtue - when that was violated, he fell."

Guddu: "But Vishnu tricking Vrinda seems wrong!"

Dadi: "You're right to feel that, beta. The stories don't hide the complexity. Sometimes even gods make choices that have painful consequences. Vishnu had to live with the curse. Nothing comes without a price."

Guddu: "What happened to Vrinda?"

Dadi: "According to tradition, she was reborn as the Tulsi plant - the sacred basil that's worshipped in every Hindu home. Her soul merged with Vishnu eventually, transforming her tragedy into something holy."

Guddu: "The Tulsi plant in our courtyard..."

Dadi: "Is connected to this story, yes. When you water the Tulsi, you're honoring Vrinda's memory - her faithfulness, her sacrifice, her eventual union with the divine."

Guddu: "This story makes me uncomfortable, Dadi."

Dadi: "Good stories should sometimes, beta. Real wisdom includes understanding that the universe isn't always fair, that actions have consequences that ripple through time, and that even gods operate under cosmic laws they cannot escape."

Guddu: "I need to think about this one more."

Dadi: "Take your time. The deepest stories reveal new meanings as you grow. For now, remember: faithfulness is powerful, deception has consequences, and nothing - not even the actions of gods - is without cost."
