Akrura's Journey - The Devotee Who Fetched God

Bhagavata Purana - Book 10, Chapters 38-39

Dadi: "Beta Guddu, have you ever had to do something you didn't want to, because it was your duty?"

Guddu: "Like when I have to eat vegetables even though I don't like them?"

Dadi: "*laughs* Something like that! But imagine if your duty was to take someone you secretly loved into a dangerous trap. That was Akrura's impossible situation."

Guddu: "Who was Akrura?"

Dadi: "Akrura was a minister in the court of King Kansa - the evil king who wanted to kill Krishna. But here's the thing: secretly, in his heart, Akrura was Krishna's devoted worshipper!"

Guddu: "That must have been so hard! Working for the bad guy while loving Krishna!"

Dadi: "For years, Akrura served Kansa while secretly praying to Krishna. It was like living two lives, beta. One day, Kansa called him and said, "Go to Vrindavan. Bring Krishna and his brother Balarama to Mathura. Tell them there's a wrestling tournament.""

Guddu: "But it was a trap, wasn't it?"

Dadi: "Yes. Kansa planned to have them killed by his champion wrestlers, or by a mad elephant, or by soldiers. Akrura knew the truth. But... going meant he would finally meet Krishna in person!"

Guddu: "So he went anyway?"

Dadi: "He did. The journey to Vrindavan took three days, and Akrura spent every moment dreaming. He rehearsed what he would say. He imagined what Krishna would look like. He worried that serving Kansa for so long had made him unworthy."

Guddu: "Was he scared?"

Dadi: "Terrified and excited at the same time! When he arrived, he saw Krishna and Balarama walking toward the village, surrounded by cows and cowherd boys, covered in dust from the day's work."

Guddu: "And then?"

Dadi: "Akrura fell from his chariot! Not stepped down - fell! His legs wouldn't hold him. He landed in the dust and began to cry."

Guddu: "He was so overwhelmed!"

Dadi: "Krishna walked to him and lifted him gently. "Uncle Akrura. We've been expecting you.""

Guddu: "Krishna knew he was coming?"

Dadi: ""We know everything," Krishna said. "Including the real reason you came - not to serve Kansa's trap, but to serve your own heart. You'll stay with us tonight.""

Guddu: "Did Akrura warn them about the trap?"

Dadi: "He tried! "You'll go to Mathura? Even knowing what Kansa plans?""

Guddu: "What did Krishna say?"

Dadi: ""Especially knowing. It's time. Kansa's reign must end. And you, uncle, will be the one who brings us to our destiny. Your impossible position became the bridge between Vrindavan and Mathura.""

Guddu: "So Akrura's hard situation was actually important!"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta! That night, Akrura stayed with Krishna's family. He watched Krishna eat dinner, joke with his foster parents, tease his brother. He saw God being a son, being a friend, being just... a boy."

Guddu: "That must have been amazing to see."

Dadi: "He asked Krishna's foster father Nanda, "How do you treat him so normally? Knowing what he is?" And Nanda said something beautiful: "He's my son. Whatever else he may be to the world, to us he's family first.""

Guddu: "Family comes before everything!"

Dadi: "The next morning, they left for Mathura. All of Vrindavan came to say goodbye. The gopis wept. They somehow knew Krishna was not coming back."

Guddu: "That's sad, Dadi."

Dadi: "It was. But endings are also beginnings, beta. On the journey, something miraculous happened. Akrura stopped to bathe in the river Yamuna for his noon prayers."

Guddu: "What happened in the river?"

Dadi: "When he went underwater, he saw Krishna and Balarama there too - not as cowherd boys, but in their divine cosmic forms! Glowing, radiant, surrounded by celestial beings. He came up for air, looked at the chariot - they were sitting there normally. He dove again - divine vision! He surfaced - normal boys!"

Guddu: "That's incredible! It was like a secret show just for him!"

Dadi: "When Akrura finally came out of the river, shaking, Krishna smiled innocently. "Are you quite finished? You've been bobbing like a cork for an hour!""

Guddu: "*laughs* Krishna was teasing him!"

Dadi: "Always, beta. But Akrura had been given a gift - a glimpse of the true divine reality behind Krishna's human appearance. Very few people ever see that."

Guddu: "Why do you think Krishna showed him?"

Dadi: "Perhaps because Akrura had served faithfully for so long, despite living in impossible circumstances. His hidden devotion, his secret love - none of it was wasted. Krishna saw everything, and rewarded it."

Guddu: "So even when we love quietly, without anyone knowing, it matters?"

Dadi: "It always matters, beta. Every prayer counts. Every good thought is received. Akrura had carried a secret devotion for years, feeling like a traitor to everyone. But Krishna told him, "You served Kansa with your actions and me with your heart. Both services were real. Both brought you here.""

Guddu: "That's beautiful, Dadi."

Dadi: "Some devotees worship in temples. Some write songs. Akrura drove a chariot. And in that driving, he found everything he had been searching for his whole life."

Guddu: "I learned something, Dadi. Even if our situation seems impossible, we can still love God in our hearts."

Dadi: "And that love is never, ever wasted, beta. The Lord sees everything."
