Kalki - The Avatar Yet to Come

Kalki Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, you know about Rama and Krishna - the avatars who already came. But did you know there's one avatar who HASN'T come yet?"

Guddu: "An avatar in the future? Who?"

Dadi: "His name is Kalki. He's the tenth and final avatar of Lord Vishnu, and the ancient books describe when and why he'll appear."

Guddu: "When will he come?"

Dadi: "At the very end of Kali Yuga - the dark age we're living in now. The scriptures describe terrible conditions: when rulers become thieves, when truth is called lie and lies become truth, when people are small in body and great in sins..."

Guddu: "That sounds pretty bad!"

Dadi: "It's meant to describe the lowest point civilization can reach. When righteousness exists only in name, when life spans have shortened, when corruption is everywhere - then Kalki will appear."

Guddu: "How will he be born?"

Dadi: "In a village called Shambhala, to a brahmin named Vishnuyasha and his wife Sumati. Unlike other avatars who showed miraculous signs from birth, Kalki will seem ordinary at first."

Guddu: "A normal boy?"

Dadi: "Learning the Vedas, doing his duties, living quietly. But then Parashurama - another avatar who's still alive - will recognize him. Remember, Parashurama is a Chiranjivi, an immortal!"

Guddu: "He's been waiting to meet Kalki?"

Dadi: "For thousands of years! Parashurama will train Kalki in martial arts, pass on divine weapons, reveal his true nature. Then the great sages will bless him, and Lord Shiva will give him two gifts."

Guddu: "What gifts?"

Dadi: "A white horse named Devadatta, swift as thought itself. And a blazing sword called Ratnamaru that can cut through any darkness."

Guddu: "A divine horse and sword! Then what?"

Dadi: "Kalki will ride forth. Not for ordinary war, but for cosmic cleansing. The corrupt will fall before him like leaves in autumn wind. It won't be battle as we understand it - it will be adharma meeting its inevitable end."

Guddu: "What happens after?"

Dadi: "When the purification is complete, Kalki will establish Satya Yuga - the Age of Truth. In that age, dharma stands on all four feet instead of just one. People live for thousands of years. The earth produces abundance without hard labor. Peace everywhere."

Guddu: "That sounds like paradise!"

Dadi: "And then the cycle begins again. Satya Yuga will eventually decline, becoming Treta Yuga, then Dvapara Yuga, then another Kali Yuga. Round and round, forever."

Guddu: "That's kind of sad - it all falls apart again?"

Dadi: "Or beautiful, depending on how you see it. Every ending contains a new beginning. Every darkness ends in light. The cycles mean that no matter how bad things get, renewal is always coming."

Guddu: "Why hasn't Kalki come yet?"

Dadi: "The time isn't right. Kali Yuga lasts 432,000 years, and we're only about 5,000 years in! Much more darkness must deepen before dawn arrives."

Guddu: "What can WE do in the meantime?"

Dadi: "*(holding his hand)* That's the real question, isn't it? The scriptures say that even in Kali Yuga, one advantage exists: spiritual progress that took ages in other yugas can happen quickly now. Simply chanting God's name, being kind, speaking truth - these shine brighter against the darkness."

Guddu: "So we can be little lights while waiting for the big one?"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta. Kalki will come when he comes. In the meantime, each of us can be a tiny Kalki - destroying small darknesses with our small lights. You might not end an age, but you can brighten a day."

Guddu: "I like that. Being a mini-Kalki!"

Dadi: "*(laughing)* On your little white bicycle instead of a white horse. Fighting small battles for truth. That's how we wait for the avatar - by being avatars in our own small ways."
