Hanuman's Own Ramayana - The Song He Destroyed for Love

Traditional Account, Various Retellings

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, if you made something beautiful - the best painting, the best story - would you destroy it?"

Guddu: "Destroy it?! Why would anyone do that?"

Dadi: "That's exactly what Hanuman did. And the reason why... it's the most beautiful lesson about love I know."

Guddu: "Tell me, Dadi!"

Dadi: "After everything was over - the war won, Rama crowned king, peace everywhere - Hanuman went to the Himalayas. His heart was so full of love that he had to express it somehow."

Guddu: "What did he do?"

Dadi: "He wrote the entire story of Rama's life. But not on paper, beta. He carved it into the mountain rocks using his own nails!"

Guddu: "With his NAILS?!"

Dadi: "Every detail, every moment, every beautiful thing he had witnessed. His poetry was perfect. His grammar was flawless. And because he had actually been there, seen everything with his own eyes, his version had details no one else could know."

Guddu: "That must have been the best Ramayana ever!"

Dadi: "It was. Meanwhile, a great sage named Valmiki had also written a Ramayana - the version people still read today. He was proud of his life's work. Then he heard about Hanuman's version."

Guddu: "What happened?"

Dadi: "Curiosity brought Valmiki to the Himalayas. He read Hanuman's Ramayana carved in stone. And when he finished... he sat down and wept."

Guddu: "Why? Was it sad?"

Dadi: "No, beta. It was too beautiful. Valmiki cried, "My Ramayana is just scholarship. This one is pure love! My verses are correct. His are ALIVE. No one will read mine when they can read this. My life's work is meaningless now.""

Guddu: "Oh no! Poor Valmiki!"

Dadi: "Hanuman heard the crying and came. Without a word, he began scraping the rocks clean. Every verse, every chapter - gone in minutes."

Guddu: "*(gasping)* He destroyed his own masterpiece?!"

Dadi: ""What are you DOING?" Valmiki shouted. But Hanuman just kept erasing. When it was done, he said simply: "I wrote for Rama's glory, not my own. If my Ramayana stops yours from spreading Rama's name, then mine must go.""

Guddu: "But... but his was better!"

Dadi: "Valmiki said the same thing! Hanuman replied, "Better for what? For competition? For pride? Your Ramayana will travel the world in the language scholars understand. Mine would stay on this mountain, admired by few. Yours will reach millions. THAT is what matters.""

Guddu: "He gave up something amazing... for Rama?"

Dadi: "*(her eyes glistening)* He said, "The creation was an offering to Rama. The destruction is ALSO an offering to Rama. There is no difference.""

Guddu: "*(quietly)* That's... I don't know if I could do that."

Dadi: "Valmiki fell at Hanuman's feet. "This act is greater than any epic. This is the truest devotion I've ever seen.""

Guddu: "Did anything survive?"

Dadi: "Valmiki begged to keep just one verse. Hanuman agreed. They say it's hidden somewhere in Valmiki's Ramayana - a moment so extraordinarily beautiful it could only have come from Hanuman. Scholars still search for it."

Guddu: "Dadi, what's the lesson here?"

Dadi: "*(holding his hands)* Sometimes, beta, real love means letting go - not of bad things, but of GOOD things. Not of failures, but of masterpieces. Hanuman didn't need to prove his love through his writing. His love was already in his heart."

Guddu: "So holding onto things... even beautiful things... isn't always love?"

Dadi: ""It is not devotion to hold onto things," Hanuman taught. "It is devotion to let go when letting go serves the beloved.""

Guddu: "The mountains are empty now where his Ramayana was?"

Dadi: "The rocks are bare. But the love that carved it - and erased it - still moves the world. That's the thing about true love, Guddu. It doesn't need monuments. It doesn't need credit. It just needs to serve."

Guddu: "I think I understand, Dadi. Real love isn't about keeping. It's about giving."

Dadi: "*(kissing his forehead)* My wise little boy. Remember this story when you make something beautiful. Ask yourself: is this for me, or for something bigger?"
