Markandeya Purana, Chapters 85-93 (Devi Mahatmya)

Dadi: "Guddu, do you know why we celebrate Dussehra and Navaratri?"

Guddu: "To remember when good defeats evil, right?"

Dadi: "Yes! And the most famous victory is when Goddess Durga defeated the buffalo demon Mahishasura. This is the story from the Devi Mahatmya - the "Glory of the Goddess.""

Guddu: "Why was the demon so powerful?"

Dadi: "Mahishasura had performed intense penance and received a boon from Lord Brahma. No MAN could kill him. With this power, he attacked heaven itself!"

Guddu: "No man... so a woman could?"

Dadi: "He hadn't thought of that! For a hundred years, the demons and gods fought. The gods kept losing. Finally, Mahishasura conquered heaven and threw Indra off his throne."

Guddu: "The king of gods... defeated?"

Dadi: "The desperate gods went to Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva for help. And something amazing happened. A brilliant light emerged from Vishnu's face. Then from Shiva's face. Then from Brahma, Indra, and all the other gods."

Guddu: "What was the light?"

Dadi: "All these divine lights merged together and took form - the form of a magnificent woman. She was Adishakti, the original feminine divine power - Goddess Durga."

Guddu: "She was made from everyone's energy?"

Dadi: "Each god contributed. Shiva formed her face. Vishnu made her arms. Her hair came from Yama. Every part of her body was a combination of divine powers."

Then they gave her their weapons! Shiva's trident. Vishnu's discus. Indra's thunderbolt. Brahma's water pot. Varuna's conch. A sword, a bow, a spear - every god's best weapon.

Guddu: "She was super-armed!"

Dadi: "And she rode a lion that the mountain king Himavan gave her. Imagine - this radiant goddess with countless arms, holding divine weapons, mounted on a roaring lion!"

Guddu: "What did Mahishasura do when he saw her?"

Dadi: "First, he sent his generals. Dhumralochana came with 60,000 soldiers. The goddess said one word - "Hum!" - and he turned to ashes. His entire army was destroyed."

Guddu: "Just one word!"

Dadi: "Then Chanda and Munda came. The goddess's face turned black with rage, and from her forehead emerged another goddess - Kali! Dark, fierce, with a sword and skull garland. Kali killed both generals and brought their heads back."

Guddu: "Two goddesses now?"

Dadi: "The fury was multiplying. But the real challenge was Raktabija - "Blood Seed." Every drop of his blood that fell to the ground created another demon just like him!"

Guddu: "That's an impossible power!"

Dadi: "The more the goddesses wounded him, the more demons appeared. The battlefield filled with thousands of Raktabijas! But Kali had an idea. She spread her enormous tongue across the entire battlefield and caught every drop of blood before it could touch the ground."

While she drank the blood, the other goddesses kept striking Raktabija until he was completely drained and died.

Guddu: "Finally!"

Dadi: "Now only Mahishasura remained. He and Durga fought for nine days. The demon could change shapes - he became a lion, an elephant, a man with a sword, then back to a buffalo."

Guddu: "That must have been confusing!"

Dadi: "On the tenth day, when he was half-emerged from his buffalo form, Durga leaped onto him, pressed him down with her foot, and struck his throat with her trident. Then she beheaded him with her sword."

Guddu: "That's why we celebrate on the tenth day! Vijayadashami!"

Dadi: ""Dashami" - the tenth. Victory! The gods showered flowers from heaven. They sang hymns praising Durga. She became known as Mahishasuramardini - "She who killed Mahisha.""

Guddu: "Dadi, what's the deeper meaning?"

Dadi: "The buffalo represents stubbornness, ignorance, the animalistic parts of ourselves. Durga represents the divine power needed to overcome our inner demons. We all have buffalo-nature within us. We all need goddess-energy to defeat it."

Guddu: "So Navaratri is about defeating our own inner demons?"

Dadi: "Nine nights of battle, one day of victory. The struggle is real and long. But with divine help and determination, victory is certain."
