Shadow Sita in Adhyatma Ramayana
— Brahmanda Purana —
Dadi: "Come, come, Guddu! Tonight I'm going to tell you a story about a secret that even Lakshman didn't know."
Guddu: "A secret? Even Lakshman didn't know? But Dadi, he was always with Lord Ram!"
Dadi: "Yes, beta, but this secret was so precious that Ram kept it hidden even from his beloved brother. It's the story of how the real Sita was never kidnapped by Ravana."
Guddu: "*eyes wide* What?! But Dadi, everyone says Ravana took Sita to Lanka!"
Dadi: "Ah, but what everyone says and what actually happened... sometimes those are different things. You see, Ram knew everything that was going to happen. He could see the future like you can see your hand in front of your face."
Guddu: "So he knew Ravana would come?"
Dadi: "Exactly, beta. And because he knew, he made a plan. Before Ravana arrived with his golden deer trick, Ram called Sita and said, "My love, create your shadow - your maya form - and step into the sacred fire. Agni Dev will protect you there.""
Guddu: "Sita could make a copy of herself?"
Dadi: "She was Goddess Lakshmi herself, Guddu! She created Maya Sita - a shadow that looked exactly like her, spoke like her, cried like her. This shadow was so perfect that even Lakshman couldn't tell the difference."
Guddu: "*thoughtfully* So when Ravana came and grabbed Sita..."
Dadi: "He grabbed only the shadow! The real Sita was safe inside the sacred fire, protected by Agni Dev himself. Poor Ravana thought he had won. He flew to Lanka feeling so proud. But he was carrying only an illusion!"
Guddu: "Did Maya Sita know she wasn't real?"
Dadi: "This is the beautiful part, beta. Maya Sita behaved exactly as the real Sita would. She cried, she dropped her jewelry as trail markers, she resisted Ravana with all her strength. She sat in that Ashoka Vatika garden for months, refusing Ravana's advances, praying only for Ram."
Guddu: "She was so brave even though she was just a shadow!"
Dadi: "Shadows can be brave too, Guddu. She had all of Sita's courage and love. When Ram finally defeated Ravana and the great war ended, everyone wanted Ram and Sita to reunite."
Guddu: "And then what happened?"
Dadi: "*voice dropping to a whisper* Ram looked at Maya Sita and said, "You must prove your purity. Walk into the fire." Everyone gasped! How could Ram ask such a thing?"
Guddu: "That sounds scary, Dadi!"
Dadi: "But here's where the magic happened. When Maya Sita walked into the flames, she simply merged back into the fire from where she had come. And from those same flames, the REAL Sita emerged - the true Sita who had been protected all along, pure as morning sunlight, untouched by Ravana's shadow."
Guddu: "*clapping hands* The fire was her hiding place all along!"
Dadi: "Yes! Agni Dev himself announced the truth: "This is the real Sita. She has been in my protection since before the kidnapping. Ram created this plan so that Ravana could be destroyed and dharma could be restored.""
Guddu: "So Ram always knew what he was doing!"
Dadi: "He did, Guddu. Sometimes the wisest people let others think they're struggling, while secretly everything is under control. Ram could have fought Ravana from the start, but he chose a path that protected Sita while still defeating evil."
Guddu: "Dadi, do people still do this? Hide things to protect the ones they love?"
Dadi: "*smiling* Every day, beta. Your mother worries about things but doesn't tell you so you can sleep peacefully. Your father works hard but comes home smiling so you feel secure. Love often means protecting others from burdens they don't need to carry."
Guddu: "I want to be like Ram when I grow up - always protecting the people I love!"
Dadi: "And that's exactly why I told you this story tonight. True strength isn't about fighting - it's about planning, protecting, and trusting. Ram trusted Agni, Sita trusted Ram, and in the end, truth emerged from the fire itself. Now close your eyes, my little warrior. Tomorrow we'll talk about another great hero!"
Guddu: "*yawning* Goodnight, Dadi. I'm going to dream about fire that protects instead of burns..."
Dadi: "*kissing his forehead* That's the most magical kind of fire there is, beta. The fire of love."
