Hanuman Reveals Rama in Heart
— Ramayana traditions —
Dadi: "Guddu, we talked about Hanuman and the pearl necklace before. But tonight, let me tell you the full story of what happened when he tore open his chest."
Guddu: "The famous image! Hanuman showing Rama and Sita in his heart!"
Dadi: "After the war with Ravana was won, Rama was crowned king of Ayodhya. There was a grand celebration. Vibhishana - Ravana's good brother who had helped Rama - brought a priceless necklace of pearls as a gift."
Guddu: "The most beautiful necklace in the world?"
Dadi: "Absolutely magnificent. Rama suggested giving it to Sita. And Sita decided to honor the one who had helped most during the war - Hanuman."
Guddu: "But Hanuman didn't want pearls."
Dadi: "He took the necklace, then shocked everyone by breaking it apart, biting each pearl and throwing them away one by one."
Guddu: "Looking for Rama inside!"
Dadi: "The courtiers were outraged. "How dare you destroy such a precious gift!" Someone mocked him: "If you value only things with Rama inside, then surely YOU must have Rama in YOU? We can't see him in you!""
Guddu: "And then?"
Dadi: "*pauses* Hanuman said quietly: "Every inch of my body has Rama in it. My heart and soul are made of Rama." And to prove it... he tore open his chest with his own hands."
Guddu: "*wide-eyed*"
Dadi: "Inside, where his heart should be, the entire court saw Rama and Sita - living, radiant, glowing with divine light. The image of the divine couple resided within Hanuman's very heart."
Guddu: "Everyone actually SAW them?"
Dadi: "The people of Ayodhya, including Rama and Sita themselves, were moved to tears. Even those who had mocked Hanuman finally understood the depth of his devotion."
Guddu: "But Dadi, didn't that hurt him? He tore his chest open!"
Dadi: "He was dying from the wound. But he had proven his truth. And then something beautiful happened."
Guddu: "What?"
Dadi: "Lord Rama, moved beyond words by this devotion, cured Hanuman and blessed him with immortality. Hanuman would never die."
Guddu: "Did Hanuman want immortality?"
Dadi: "He tried to refuse! He said all he wanted was a place at Rama and Sita's feet forever. But Rama loved him so deeply that he blessed him anyway."
Guddu: "So Hanuman is still alive today?"
Dadi: "The tradition says yes - wherever Rama's name is sung with devotion, Hanuman comes to listen. He is chiranjeevi, the immortal one."
Guddu: "Dadi, what's the lesson from this story?"
Dadi: "That true devotion is not just words or rituals. It's so complete that the beloved actually lives inside you. Hanuman didn't have to think about Rama - Rama was literally in every cell of his being."
Guddu: "Is that possible for regular people?"
Dadi: "*hugs him* Not literally tearing our chests open! But yes - when you love someone deeply, when you think of them constantly, when their welfare matters more than your own - they live in your heart too. That's what devotion means."
Guddu: "So my parents live in my heart?"
Dadi: "Of course they do. And God lives in the hearts of those who truly love him. That's why this image of Hanuman - chest open, showing Rama and Sita - has become one of the most beloved in all of Hindu art. It shows the ultimate truth: the divine dwells within the devoted heart."
Guddu: "I'll remember Hanuman's chest whenever I feel alone."
Dadi: "He's not alone. Neither are you. Now sleep well, knowing love lives in your heart."
Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi. Jai Hanuman!"
