Hanuman and Ahiravana - The Rescue from the Underworld

Krittivasi Ramayana, Bengali Tradition

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, what would you do if your best friend was kidnapped and taken to a place no one could reach?"

Guddu: "I'd find a way to save them!"

Dadi: "That's exactly what Hanuman did - and his journey took him to the underworld itself."

Guddu: "The underworld? Like where demons live?"

Dadi: "Patala - the realm beneath the earth. During the war against Ravana, a demon king named Ahiravana lived there. He was Ravana's ally, and when he saw Ravana losing, he hatched a terrible plan."

Guddu: "What did he do?"

Dadi: "He used magic to disguise himself as Vibhishana - Rama's trusted friend. The guards let him pass. He cast a sleep spell on Rama and Lakshmana and carried them through a secret portal to Patala!"

Guddu: "He kidnapped them both?"

Dadi: "He planned to sacrifice them to his goddess. When morning came and the princes were missing, everyone panicked. But Hanuman said simply, "I will go," and dove into the ocean to find the gateway to the underworld."

Guddu: "Was it guarded?"

Dadi: "Yes - and here's the strangest part. The guardian was Makardhwaja... Hanuman's own son."

Guddu: "Wait, Hanuman had a son?"

Dadi: "When Hanuman flew back from Lanka with his burning tail, a drop of his sweat fell into the ocean. A fish swallowed it, and Ahiravana later found a baby with Hanuman's strength inside that fish. He raised the boy as his guardian."

Guddu: "What happened when father and son met?"

Dadi: "Makardhwaja said, "I cannot let you pass. I serve Ahiravana." Hanuman said, "I am your father." But his son replied, "I know. But dharma requires me to do my duty, even against my father. You taught me that - through your example.""

Guddu: "*quietly* That's so hard..."

Dadi: "They fought. Hanuman won but spared his son's life. He told Makardhwaja to guard the gate against everyone except him - that way, both their duties could be fulfilled."

Guddu: "Clever! But how did he defeat Ahiravana?"

Dadi: "*leans forward* Here's where it gets truly amazing. Ahiravana's life force was hidden in five lamps burning in five different directions. All five had to be blown out at the exact same moment, or he couldn't be killed."

Guddu: "But Hanuman only has one mouth!"

Dadi: "So he became Panchmukhi Hanuman - the five-faced one! He took a form with five heads: his own plus Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha, and Hayagriva. With five mouths, he blew out all five lamps at once."

Guddu: "Wow! Did Ahiravana die?"

Dadi: "Instantly. Hanuman freed Rama and Lakshmana and carried them back to the surface on his shoulders. When Rama asked how he knew to take five faces, Hanuman said something beautiful."

Guddu: "What?"

Dadi: ""I didn't know. I needed five. The need created the form. Devotion does not plan - it responds. Whatever is required appears.""

Guddu: "And his son? Did they meet again?"

Dadi: "Hanuman said he would visit properly after the war - as a father, not an invader. He was proud that his son had done his duty, even against him."

Guddu: "Dadi, I like that Hanuman became whatever was needed. Five faces because five were needed!"

Dadi: "That's the message, beta. True devotion doesn't say "I can't." It says "What do I need to become?" Hanuman fought his own son, took an unprecedented form, solved an impossible puzzle - all without hesitation."

Guddu: "Because Rama needed him."

Dadi: "Because Rama needed him. "Failure is not possible when the goal is Rama," Hanuman said. "Delay is possible. Difficulty is possible. But failure? Never." Now rest, my brave little one."

Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi!"
