Squirrel Ram Setu

Folk traditions

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, look at that squirrel! Do you see the three stripes on its back?"

Guddu: "Yes! All squirrels have those. Why?"

Dadi: "*smiling* Because Lord Ram once touched a squirrel with three fingers. Tonight I'll tell you that beautiful story."

Guddu: "Lord Ram touched a squirrel?! Why?"

Dadi: "It happened during the building of Ram Setu - the great bridge from India to Lanka. Thousands of monkeys and bears were working day and night, carrying enormous boulders and dropping them into the sea."

Guddu: "I know this! Hanuman and the vanara sena built it to rescue Sita!"

Dadi: "Correct! Now, while all these mighty warriors were carrying massive rocks, a tiny squirrel was watching. It thought, 'Lord Ram is the Supreme Lord himself. The monkeys are serving him by building this bridge. This is such important work - I should contribute too!'"

Guddu: "But what could a tiny squirrel do?"

Dadi: "That's exactly what the monkeys thought. But the squirrel didn't care about its size. It ran to a heap of sand near the shore, rolled around in it so the grains stuck to its tiny body, then ran to the water's edge and shook itself, letting the sand fall into the sea."

Guddu: "*giggling* That's so little compared to boulders!"

Dadi: "The squirrel went back and forth, back and forth - collecting sand, running to the water, shaking it off. Over and over. The monkeys noticed and became annoyed. 'Get out of the way, you tiny creature! You're getting underfoot!'"

Guddu: "Were they mean to it?"

Dadi: "One big monkey got so frustrated that he picked up the squirrel by its tail and threw it away! The little creature went flying through the air..."

Guddu: "*worried* Was it hurt?"

Dadi: "It cried out, 'RAM!' as it flew - and landed softly in Lord Ram's own divine hands. Ram caught it gently and held it close."

Guddu: "Ram himself caught the squirrel!"

Dadi: "And then he turned to his monkey army with an important lesson. 'O monkeys,' he said, 'you are brave and strong. You carry huge boulders from far away. But look at what this tiny creature has done. See those small pebbles and grains of sand? They fill the gaps between your giant stones!'"

Guddu: "I never thought of that!"

Dadi: "Ram continued, 'Do you realize that those tiny grains are what binds the whole structure together and makes it strong? Yet you scolded this small creature and threw it away!'"

Guddu: "The small work was just as important as the big work?"

Dadi: "Exactly! Ram said, 'Always remember - however small, every task is equally important. Great work can never be completed by a few people alone. It needs the support of all.'"

Guddu: "The monkeys must have felt bad."

Dadi: "They bowed their heads in shame. Then Ram turned to the little squirrel trembling in his palm. 'My dear squirrel,' he said softly, 'I am sorry for the hurt my army caused you.' And he gently stroked its back with three fingers."

Guddu: "That's where the stripes came from!"

Dadi: "When Ram put the squirrel down, three white lines had appeared on its back where his fingers had touched. And those marks can still be seen on all Indian palm squirrels today - the loving touch of Lord Ram himself."

Guddu: "So every time I see a squirrel, I'm seeing Ram's blessing?"

Dadi: "Yes, beta! A reminder that no service is too small, no creature is too insignificant. The squirrel's handful of sand was as valuable to Ram as Hanuman's giant mountains."

Guddu: "But the monkeys could do so much more!"

Dadi: "Size of contribution doesn't matter. What matters is the love behind it. The squirrel gave everything it had. It didn't say, 'I'm too small, what's the point?' It just served with its whole heart."

Guddu: "Dadi, I can't do big things yet. I'm still a child."

Dadi: "And yet, every small kindness you show - helping your mother, sharing with a friend, being patient with your sister - these are your grains of sand. These are YOUR contributions to building something beautiful in the world."

Guddu: "I never thought of it that way!"

Dadi: "Never let anyone make you feel that your contribution doesn't matter because it's small. And never make others feel that way either. The bridge to Lanka needed both boulders and sand. The world needs both big actions and small kindnesses."

Guddu: "I'll remember the squirrel, Dadi."

Dadi: "And Ram will remember you. Every sincere offering, however humble, touches his heart. Now sleep, my little squirrel."

Guddu: "*giggling* Goodnight, Dadi! Tomorrow I'll do my small tasks with big love!"

Dadi: "And may you receive Ram's blessing with every one. Goodnight, beta."
