Ganga Avataran - Bhagiratha Brings Ganga
— Shiva Purana —
Dadi: "Guddu, you know the river Ganga is sacred, right?"
Guddu: "Yes, Dadi! People go to bathe in it and pray."
Dadi: "But do you know how the Ganga came down from heaven to earth?"
Guddu: "From heaven? The river was in heaven first?"
Dadi: "Yes, beta. And it took generations of kings trying and failing, until one determined man named Bhagiratha finally succeeded. Let me tell you this amazing story."
Guddu: "Tell me, Dadi!"
Dadi: "Long, long ago, there was a king named Sagara who had 60,000 sons."
Guddu: "60,000?! That's a lot of brothers!"
Dadi: "*laughs* It is! One day, King Sagara was performing a great sacrifice, and his special horse went missing. He sent all his sons to find it."
Guddu: "Where did they search?"
Dadi: "Everywhere! They dug through the earth, burned forests, destroyed everything in their path. They were arrogant and careless. Finally, they found the horse near the hermitage of a meditating sage named Kapila."
Guddu: "Was the sage a thief?"
Dadi: "Not at all! The horse had simply wandered there. But the foolish princes thought Sage Kapila had stolen it. They attacked him."
Guddu: "Oh no! You shouldn't disturb a meditating sage!"
Dadi: "Exactly. When Sage Kapila opened his eyes, his gaze was filled with such power that all 60,000 princes turned to ashes instantly."
Guddu: "*gasps* All of them?"
Dadi: "All of them. And the sage cursed them - their souls would remain trapped, suffering, until the waters of the heavenly Ganga washed over their ashes."
Guddu: "But the Ganga was in heaven... How could it reach earth?"
Dadi: "That was the problem, beta. King Sagara couldn't bring the Ganga down. His son Amsuman tried and failed. His grandson Dilipa tried and failed. Generation after generation, they prayed and did penance, but the Ganga remained in heaven."
Guddu: "Did anyone ever succeed?"
Dadi: "Finally, seven generations later, a king named Bhagiratha was born. He was determined like no one before him. He went to the Himalayas and did the most terrible penance for a thousand years!"
Guddu: "A thousand years?!"
Dadi: "He stood with his arms raised to the sky, surrounded by four fires, with the blazing sun above him. He barely ate or slept. He prayed and prayed until finally, Lord Brahma appeared."
Guddu: "Did Brahma agree to send the Ganga?"
Dadi: "He agreed, but there was a problem. He said, "The Ganga's fall from heaven is so powerful that it will destroy the earth. You need Lord Shiva to catch her in his hair.""
Guddu: "In his hair?"
Dadi: "Shiva has those long, matted locks of hair, remember? Bhagiratha prayed again, this time to Shiva. The kind lord agreed to help."
Guddu: "So the Ganga finally came down?"
Dadi: "She did - but she was arrogant! She thought, "I am so powerful, I'll even sweep away Lord Shiva!" She crashed down from heaven with tremendous force."
Guddu: "What did Shiva do?"
Dadi: "*smiles* He simply spread out his serpentine hair, covered the entire sky, and caught every drop of the Ganga in his locks. Then he tied his hair into a tight bun, trapping her completely."
Guddu: "She got stuck!"
Dadi: "Poor Bhagiratha! He had done all that penance, and now the Ganga was trapped in Shiva's hair! He prayed again, more austerities, begging Shiva to release her gently."
Guddu: "Did Shiva let her go?"
Dadi: "He did, but slowly, so she wouldn't destroy the earth. The Ganga flowed out through his hair in seven streams, much calmer now."
Guddu: "Finally! She reached the earth!"
Dadi: "But wait, there's one more adventure! As the river flowed, it accidentally flooded the ashrama of another sage named Jahnu. He was so angry that he swallowed the entire river!"
Guddu: "He swallowed a river?!"
Dadi: "Sages have great powers, beta. Once again, Bhagiratha had to pray and beg. Finally, Jahnu released the Ganga through his ear. That's why she's also called Jahnavi - daughter of Jahnu."
Guddu: "Through his ear! That's funny!"
Dadi: "*laughs* It is! But finally, finally, the Ganga followed Bhagiratha across India - through Haridwar, past Prayag, past Varanasi - all the way to the ocean at Ganga Sagar. There, she flowed over the ashes of those 60,000 princes."
Guddu: "Were they freed?"
Dadi: "Their souls were finally liberated. After all those generations, Bhagiratha's determination had saved his ancestors."
Guddu: "That's why the Ganga is also called Bhagirathi!"
Dadi: "Exactly, beta! Because she followed Bhagiratha wherever he went. And in our language, when someone works very, very hard to achieve something impossible, we call it "Bhagiratha Prayatna" - an effort like Bhagiratha's."
Guddu: "Dadi, I think the lesson is - never give up, even if your father and grandfather failed?"
Dadi: "*hugs him* Yes, my wise boy. Some goals take generations to achieve. What matters is that someone keeps trying. Bhagiratha didn't say, "My father couldn't do it, so why should I try?" He said, "I will be the one to succeed.""
Guddu: "And he did!"
Dadi: "And because of him, the holiest river flows through our land, giving peace to millions. Now, shall we say a prayer to the Ganga before bed?"
Guddu: "Yes, Dadi. Thank you, Bhagiratha!"
