Agastya Subdues the Vindhya Mountains

Skanda Purana

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Beta Guddu, have you ever seen the Vindhya mountains on a map? They stretch right across the middle of India."

Guddu: "Yes, Dadi! They're like a big wall dividing north and south India!"

Dadi: "Exactly! But do you know why they're not as tall as the Himalayas? It's because of our friend Sage Agastya and a very proud mountain!"

Guddu: "A proud mountain? Mountains can be proud?"

Dadi: "In our stories, beta, everything in nature has a spirit - rivers, trees, and yes, even mountains! The Vindhya mountain was alive with consciousness, and he had a big problem - he was terribly jealous of Mount Meru."

Guddu: "Mount Meru? What's that?"

Dadi: "Mount Meru is the sacred mountain at the center of the universe. The sun and moon circle around it, and the gods themselves live near it. This made Vindhya very, very jealous."

Guddu: "Why was he jealous?"

Dadi: "One day, the celestial sage Narada - who loved to create interesting situations - visited Vindhya. After being welcomed warmly, Narada mentioned, "I just came from Mount Meru. The sun and moon revolve around him. That's why he's so arrogant.""

Guddu: "Ooh, Narada was stirring up trouble!"

Dadi: "*laughs* As he often did, beta! Hearing this, Vindhya thought, "Why should Meru get all the glory? I'll show everyone I'm greater!" And he began to grow taller and taller!"

Guddu: "How tall did he grow?"

Dadi: "Higher and higher, until his peaks touched the sky itself! And then something terrible happened - the Sun and Moon couldn't pass over him anymore. Their paths were blocked!"

Guddu: "Oh no! So there was no day and night?"

Dadi: "Everything fell into chaos, beta. Day and night became irregular. Seasons stopped following their proper order. Crops failed. All of creation was suffering because of one mountain's pride."

Guddu: "Couldn't the gods make him stop?"

Dadi: "They tried! The gods came in groups, praising Vindhya, begging him to lower himself. But the proud mountain refused. He was too pleased with himself to care about others' suffering."

Guddu: "So what did they do?"

Dadi: "Finally, the gods approached Sage Agastya. Now, Agastya was living in the holy city of Kashi - a place he loved more than anywhere else. Leaving it was like giving up his greatest treasure. But for the good of the world, he agreed to help."

Guddu: "How could a sage make a mountain bow down?"

Dadi: "The power of spiritual achievement, beta! When Vindhya saw Agastya approaching, blazing with the fire of his penance, the mountain began to tremble with fear. Vindhya had heard of Agastya's incredible powers - this was the sage who had drunk the ocean!"

Guddu: "I remember that story!"

Dadi: "So Vindhya knew better than to mess with Agastya. Before the sage could say anything harsh, the mountain quickly contracted all his tall peaks and bowed low before Agastya in respect."

Guddu: "The mountain bowed! That must have looked amazing!"

Dadi: "Agastya smiled and said, "O wise Vindhya, you know my power. Stay lowered in this position until I return from my journey south.""

Guddu: "And Vindhya agreed?"

Dadi: "He promised to wait. The mountain was so relieved not to have been cursed that he happily agreed. He thought, "The sage will go south and come back soon, and then I can rise again.""

Guddu: "And did Agastya come back?"

Dadi: "*smiles mysteriously* Here's the clever part, beta. Agastya traveled south, crossed the Vindhya range, and built a hermitage in the Malaya mountains. And there he stayed... forever. He never went back north!"

Guddu: "*gasps* So Vindhya is still waiting?"

Dadi: "To this very day, beta! The Vindhya mountains have never risen to their former height. They're still bowing, still waiting for Agastya to return - a return that will never come. That's why the Vindhyas are much lower than the Himalayas!"

Guddu: "*laughs* That's so clever of Agastya! And serves the mountain right for being so proud!"

Dadi: "Yes, beta. Pride can make us blind to how our actions hurt others. Vindhya was so focused on being the greatest that he didn't care that the whole world was suffering. His pride literally blocked the light!"

Guddu: "And what happened to the sun and moon?"

Dadi: "The moment Vindhya lowered himself, the sun's charioteer drove forward. Light returned to the world. The seasons resumed. Life went back to normal."

Guddu: "I'm glad! But Dadi, wasn't it sad for Agastya to leave Kashi forever?"

Dadi: "It was, beta. He loved that holy city. But sometimes we must sacrifice what we love for a greater good. Agastya gave up his favorite home so that the whole world could have light again."

Guddu: "He was really selfless, wasn't he?"

Dadi: "Very much so. And that's why his name means "one who subdued the mountain" - Aga means mountain, and stya means to make steady or bow. The name tells his story!"

Guddu: "I learned a big lesson today, Dadi. Being proud and blocking others' way is bad. And sometimes we have to give up what we love to help everyone."

Dadi: "Perfect, beta. Now remember, like Vindhya, we should know when to bow - not from weakness, but from wisdom."
