The Ashvins Rescue of Atri

Rig Veda, Mandala I, Hymns 116-119

Dadi: "Guddu, have you ever been in trouble and wished someone would come help you?"

Guddu: "Yes, Dadi! Like when I fell off my bicycle and you came running!"

Dadi: "*smiles warmly* That's right, beta. Today I'll tell you about two divine brothers who always come running when someone calls for help. They are the Ashvins - the twin gods of healing and rescue."

Guddu: "Twin gods? Like twin brothers?"

Dadi: "Exactly! The Ashvins are described in our oldest scriptures, the Rigveda. They are young, handsome, and ride a golden chariot pulled by horses that never get tired. They are the doctors of the gods - they heal the sick and rescue people from danger."

Guddu: "Like superheroes!"

Dadi: "Very much like superheroes, beta. The Rigveda mentions them 398 times! That's how important they were. Today I'll tell you about how they saved the great sage Atri."

Guddu: "What happened to Atri?"

Dadi: "Atri was one of the Saptarishis - the Seven Great Sages. He was a very holy man, born from the mind of Lord Brahma himself. One day, Atri and his followers were walking through a dangerous area when something terrible happened."

Guddu: "What, Dadi?"

Dadi: "Evil beings called Dasyus attacked them! These were lawless creatures who hated everything good and holy. Through their wicked tricks, they made Atri and his group fall into a deep fiery pit in the earth."

Guddu: "A pit of fire?! That's so scary!"

Dadi: "It was terrifying, beta. Imagine - falling into a crack in the ground, surrounded by scorching heat, unable to escape. The flames were all around them, and the Dasyus were laughing from above."

Guddu: "How did they get out?"

Dadi: "Atri, even in that terrible moment, didn't give up hope. He remembered the Ashvins - the divine rescuers who always answered prayers. With all his heart, he called out to them."

Guddu: "Did they come?"

Dadi: "They came faster than thought, beta! The Ashvins heard his cry and flew down in their golden chariot. The Rigveda says they "freed Atri from narrow straits, from the earth cleft.""

Guddu: "What does "narrow straits" mean?"

Dadi: "It means a tight, difficult place where you're trapped. The Ashvins drove away the evil Dasyus, "one after another," and then they did something amazing - they made the burning heat become "friendly" to Atri. The fire couldn't hurt him anymore!"

Guddu: "They turned enemy fire into friendly fire?"

Dadi: "In a way, yes! And after rescuing him, they didn't just leave. They gave Atri and his followers "strengthening food and favor" - they took care of them until they were fully recovered."

Guddu: "The Ashvins sound really kind, Dadi."

Dadi: "They are, beta. And Atri wasn't the only one they saved. The Ashvins have rescued many people. They saved a man named Bhujyu who was drowning in the sea. They helped an old sage named Chyavana become young again. They gave sight to a blind man named Rijrasva. They even gave new legs to a woman warrior named Vishpala who lost hers in battle!"

Guddu: "Wow! They help everyone!"

Dadi: "That's their nature - to rescue those in distress. You see, beta, in those ancient times, the sages would compose beautiful hymns praising the Ashvins, and in return, the Ashvins would protect them. It was a relationship of love and gratitude."

Guddu: "Dadi, do the Ashvins still help people today?"

Dadi: "*thoughtfully* The divine always helps those who call with sincere hearts. Maybe they don't appear in golden chariots anymore, but think about it - when you're in trouble, who comes to help? Parents, doctors, friends, firefighters, kind strangers... Maybe the Ashvins work through all these people."

Guddu: "Oh! So when the firefighter saved that cat from the tree, maybe the Ashvins were helping?"

Dadi: "Maybe, beta. The spirit of rescue, of helping others in danger, never dies. It's divine."

Guddu: "What's the lesson from this story, Dadi?"

Dadi: "Several lessons, mere bacche. First, never lose hope, even in the worst situation. Atri was trapped in a pit of fire, but he still prayed and believed help would come."

Guddu: "And second?"

Dadi: "Second, divine help is always available to those who ask with a pure heart. The Ashvins didn't ask what caste Atri was, or what he could give them. They just came because he needed them."

Guddu: "And third?"

Dadi: "Third - and this is important for you - we should all try to be like the Ashvins. When someone is in trouble, we should help them. When a friend is sad, we should comfort them. When someone is struggling, we should offer our hand."

Guddu: "Be a rescuer, not a bystander!"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta! The world needs more people who run toward those in need, just like the divine twins. Now, shall I tell you more about the other rescues of the Ashvins?"

Guddu: "Yes please, Dadi! Tell me about the man they saved from drowning!"

Dadi: "That's the story of Bhujyu, and it's quite an adventure. But let's save that for tomorrow night, shall we?"

Guddu: "Okay, Dadi. I'll be waiting!"
