Agastya Drinks the Ocean

Mahabharata Vana Parva

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Beta Guddu, can you imagine drinking up an entire ocean? All the water from all the beaches and islands, every single drop?"

Guddu: "That's impossible, Dadi! Nobody can drink a whole ocean!"

Dadi: "Well, beta, let me tell you about the time when Sage Agastya did exactly that - and saved the whole universe by doing it!"

Guddu: "The same Agastya from the Vatapi story?"

Dadi: "The very same! This sage was truly extraordinary. Now, long ago, there were terrible demons called the Kalakeyas. They were so powerful that even the gods feared them. Their leader Vritra had been killed by Lord Indra, but instead of giving up, the Kalakeyas became even more vicious."

Guddu: "What did they do, Dadi?"

Dadi: "They attacked sages, destroyed holy places, and killed innocent people everywhere. The worst part? They had a perfect hiding place. During the night, they would come out and cause destruction. But when morning came, they would dive deep into the ocean and hide there. The gods couldn't reach them underwater!"

Guddu: "So the ocean was protecting the bad demons?"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta. The ocean was the domain of Lord Varuna, and even the gods couldn't enter it to fight the demons. All the sacrifices and prayers stopped. People lived in terror. Finally, the desperate gods went to Lord Vishnu and asked for help."

Guddu: "What did Lord Vishnu say?"

Dadi: "Lord Vishnu told them, "There's only one being in the universe who can help you - Sage Agastya. Only he has the power to drink the entire ocean.""

Guddu: "Drink the WHOLE ocean? But Dadi, that sounds impossible even for a sage!"

Dadi: "Agastya's spiritual power was beyond imagination, beta. When Brahma and all the gods came to him and explained the problem, Agastya said, "I will do what needs to be done for the good of all beings.""

Guddu: "Then what happened?"

Dadi: "Imagine the scene, beta. Thousands of beings gathered at the ocean's shore - gods, sages, celestial musicians, even serpents - all watching. The great sage walked to the edge of the roaring, endless ocean with its dancing waves and mysterious depths."

Guddu: "I can picture it, Dadi! Like in the movies!"

Dadi: "Even better than movies, beta! Agastya looked at the vast waters and announced, "I am going to drink this ocean - the home of Varuna himself." And then... he began to drink."

Guddu: "And it worked?"

Dadi: "With his tremendous yogic power, Agastya drank and drank. The water level dropped and dropped. Fish flopped on newly exposed land. Ships settled onto sand. And soon - the entire ocean was gone! Not a drop remained!"

Guddu: "Wow! And what about the demons?"

Dadi: "With nowhere to hide, the Kalakeyas were exposed and weak. The gods attacked them with their divine weapons. The demons fought hard, but without their ocean sanctuary, they couldn't survive. Most were destroyed that day!"

Guddu: "That's amazing! But Dadi, what about all the fish and sea creatures? And what about the people who needed the ocean?"

Dadi: "Very good question, beta. After the battle, the gods came back to Agastya and said, "Please return the water. The world needs its ocean.""

Guddu: "And did he?"

Dadi: "This is the sad part, beta. Agastya replied, "I'm sorry, but I have already digested all that water. It cannot be returned.""

Guddu: "Oh no! What happened to the world without its ocean?"

Dadi: "The gods were worried too. But then Lord Brahma smiled and said, "Do not despair. In the future, a great king named Bhagiratha will bring the heavenly river Ganga down to earth, and her waters will fill the ocean again.""

Guddu: "Bhagiratha! I know that story - he brought Ganga from heaven!"

Dadi: "Yes, beta! The stories are all connected, like a beautiful garland. Agastya's drinking of the ocean and Bhagiratha's bringing of Ganga are both part of the same cosmic plan. Every problem has a solution, and every sacrifice serves a greater purpose."

Guddu: "So Agastya didn't do anything wrong by drinking the ocean?"

Dadi: "Not at all, beta. He saved the world from the demons. And the universe had its own way of restoring balance later. This teaches us that sometimes we must take bold action for the greater good, trusting that things will work out in the end."

Guddu: "I love how Agastya was so brave! He didn't even worry about how big the ocean was."

Dadi: "That's the power of faith and inner strength, beta. When we know our purpose is right, we can accomplish things that seem impossible. Agastya didn't say, "But the ocean is so big!" He simply did what needed to be done."

Guddu: "I want to be brave like that too, Dadi!"

Dadi: "You already are, beta. Every time you face something difficult and don't give up, you're being like Agastya. Now, shall we drink some milk? Just a glass, though - not an ocean!"

Guddu: "*laughs* Yes, Dadi! I think a glass is enough for me!"
