Ramana Maharshi - The Silent Sage Who Taught Self-Inquiry (Jnana Yoga)
ā Ramana Maharshi's Teachings, Historical (20th Century) ā
Dadi: "Guddu, have you ever wondered who you really are?"
Guddu: "What do you mean, Dadi? I'm Guddu!"
Dadi: "Yes, but who is this "Guddu"? Is it your body? Your thoughts? Your feelings? Tonight I'll tell you about a boy who asked this question so deeply that he discovered the answer - and it changed everything."
Guddu: "Who was he?"
Dadi: "His name was Venkataraman, and in 1896, when he was just sixteen years old - not much older than you'll be someday - something extraordinary happened."
Guddu: "What happened?"
Dadi: "He was sitting alone in a room when suddenly, without any warning, a terrible fear of death seized him. His heart pounded. He felt certain he was going to die right then and there."
Guddu: "That's terrifying! Did he call for help?"
Dadi: "No, beta. That's what makes this story so remarkable. Instead of panicking, he thought, "Death has come. But what does that mean? What exactly is dying?""
Guddu: "What did he do?"
Dadi: "He lay down on the floor and pretended to be dead. He held his breath, stiffened his body like a corpse, and imagined being carried to the cremation ground and burned."
Guddu: "That's so creepy, Dadi!"
Dadi: "I know! But here's what he discovered. Even as he imagined his body being burned, something was still aware of it all. Something was watching. He realized, "The body can die, but I cannot die. I am not this body. I am the awareness that sees the body.""
Guddu: "What does that mean?"
Dadi: "Think of it this way. When you watch a movie, you see characters on the screen. Those characters come and go, but YOU - the one watching - you remain. Venkataraman realized that he was like the watcher, not the movie."
Guddu: "So his fear of death went away?"
Dadi: "Completely! From that moment, he knew he was something that could never die. He became known as Ramana Maharshi, and he spent the rest of his life at a sacred mountain called Arunachala."
Guddu: "Did he teach people what he learned?"
Dadi: "For years, he said almost nothing. He just sat in silence. People gathered around him, sensing something special, and eventually they asked questions. And he had only one teaching - one simple question for them to ask themselves."
Guddu: "What was the question?"
Dadi: ""Who am I?" That's it! Whenever someone came with a problem, he would say, "Ask yourself - who is experiencing this problem? Who is worried? Who is afraid?""
Guddu: "But the answer is "I am"!"
Dadi: "Yes! And then he would say, "Now ask - who is this 'I'? Can you find it? Look for it.""
Guddu: "What happens when you look?"
Dadi: "You can't find it! You can find thoughts, feelings, memories - but the "I" that's aware of all these things? It's like trying to see your own eyes without a mirror. The looker cannot be what's looked at."
Guddu: "So then what?"
Dadi: "When you can't find the "I" as any particular thing, you discover that you are the awareness itself - pure, unlimited, always present. That awareness is who you really are. And that awareness doesn't die, doesn't worry, doesn't suffer."
Guddu: "This is making my brain hurt, Dadi!"
Dadi: "Ha! That's normal. Ramana Maharshi said the truth is actually very simple - so simple that we miss it by looking for something complicated. He said, "You are already enlightened. The difficulty is only in believing otherwise.""
Guddu: "Is it really that easy?"
Dadi: "He said there's nothing easier. But we make it hard because we keep chasing other things. We want more toys, better grades, people to like us. We never stop to ask who wants all these things."
Guddu: "What happened when people sat with him?"
Dadi: "Many people reported feeling transformed just by being in his presence. When he was dying of cancer, his devotees wept and asked, "Where will you go?" Do you know what he said?"
Guddu: "What?"
Dadi: ""Where can I go? I am here." Not here in the body, but here as the awareness that's everywhere, always."
Guddu: "Dadi, can I try asking "Who am I?""
Dadi: "Of course! But don't expect a word-answer. Just look. When you think "I'm happy" or "I'm sad" - who is this "I"? Look for it. If you keep looking, you might discover what Ramana discovered - that you are not your thoughts, not your body, but something much more wonderful."
Guddu: "Something that can never die?"
Dadi: "Something that was never born, beta. And that's the greatest secret of all."
