Angada Embassy to Ravana
— Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda —
Dadi: "Beta Guddu, have you ever had to deliver a message that you knew the other person wouldn't like?"
Guddu: "Like telling my friend that I couldn't come to his party?"
Dadi: "Imagine something harder - imagine walking into an enemy's palace, surrounded by thousands of demons, and delivering a warning that might make them want to kill you!"
Guddu: "That sounds terrifying! Who had to do that?"
Dadi: "A brave young warrior named Angada. He was the son of the mighty Vali and was one of the foremost warriors in the monkey army. Lord Rama sent him as a messenger to Ravana."
Guddu: "Why did Rama send a message? The war was about to start!"
Dadi: "That's exactly the point, beta. Even though Rama was ready for war, he was not eager for bloodshed. He wanted to give Ravana one final chance to return Sita peacefully and save his people."
Guddu: "Rama was being kind even to his enemy?"
Dadi: "That's what makes Rama great. He told Angada, "Go to Ravana. Remind him of his evil deed. Warn him of the consequences. Give him a chance to return Sita and seek forgiveness. If he refuses, then he will face my wrath.""
Guddu: "And Angada agreed to go alone into Lanka?"
Dadi: "Without hesitation! He leapt into the air like a bolt of fire and flew across the ocean. His golden bracelets gleamed in the sunlight as he soared toward the golden city."
Guddu: "He must have been so brave!"
Dadi: "He landed right in Ravana's assembly hall! There sat the ten-headed king, surrounded by his ministers, looking confident and powerful. And Angada stood before them all, showing no fear."
Guddu: "What did he say?"
Dadi: "He introduced himself: "I am the son of Vali, Angada by name. I come as a messenger from Rama of the Raghu dynasty." Then he delivered Rama's complete message."
Guddu: "What was the message?"
Dadi: ""Your arrogance shall be subdued. Whatever wrong you have done by carrying away my wife shall now bear its fruit. Come forth and fight. I shall destroy you along with your ministers, sons, and relatives. But there is still a path of survival - return Sita, bow before me, and perhaps Lanka may be saved.""
Guddu: "That's a powerful message! How did Ravana react?"
Dadi: "His eyes blazed with fury. His ten heads trembled with rage. How dare a monkey speak to him like this? He who had conquered the three worlds, humbled the gods! He shouted, "Seize this insolent monkey! Put him to death!""
Guddu: "Oh no! What happened to Angada?"
Dadi: "Four huge demons rushed forward and grabbed Angada by his arms, trying to drag him away. But Angada was the son of Vali - no ordinary warrior. He let them grab him, biding his time."
Guddu: "He had a plan?"
Dadi: "With a tremendous leap, he shot upward toward the ceiling, carrying all four demons with him! They were clinging to his arms, terrified! Then with a casual flexing of his muscles, he shook them off, and they crashed to the ground in front of their king!"
Guddu: "*excitedly* That's amazing!"
Dadi: "But Angada wasn't done. He landed on the roof of Ravana's magnificent palace. And before everyone's eyes, he began tearing it apart with his bare hands!"
Guddu: "He destroyed the palace roof?"
Dadi: "Beautiful carvings, precious metals, architectural wonders crafted over centuries - all raining down on the assembly below! Ministers and warriors fled in panic."
Guddu: "He was showing them how powerful Rama's army was!"
Dadi: "Exactly. Having made his point, Angada leapt back into the sky. As he flew away, he called out: "Victory to Rama! Victory to Lakshmana! Victory to King Sugriva! I am Angada, son of Vali! Prepare for war, demons, for your destruction is at hand!""
Guddu: "He was so brave, Dadi! He went alone into enemy territory and escaped!"
Dadi: "He did more than escape - he humiliated them. He showed that even one warrior from Rama's army could not be captured by Ravana's forces."
Guddu: "What happened after he returned?"
Dadi: "Angada reported everything to Rama - Ravana's arrogance, his refusal to consider peace, his order to seize a messenger. Rama nodded gravely. He had offered peace and been refused."
Guddu: "So then the war began?"
Dadi: "Yes. Rama said, "So be it. Let the attack begin." The great siege of Lanka commenced."
Guddu: "Was there any hope Ravana would change his mind?"
Dadi: "Sadly, no. His pride was too great. Even with destruction coming, he couldn't humble himself. Some people would rather lose everything than admit they were wrong."
Guddu: "What's the lesson, Dadi?"
Dadi: "Several lessons, beta. First, even in war, the righteous try for peace. Rama gave his enemy a final chance. Second, true courage is doing what's right even when surrounded by danger. Angada could have been killed, but he delivered his message fearlessly. Third, pride leads to downfall. Ravana's refusal to listen cost him everything."
Guddu: "And Angada showed that sometimes one brave person can send a powerful message to a whole kingdom!"
Dadi: "Perfect understanding, beta. Never underestimate the power of one person standing for what's right. Now, would you be brave enough to deliver a message for me? Tell your mother dinner is ready!"
Guddu: "*laughs* That's much easier than Lanka, Dadi! I'll go right now!"
