Lakshmi Emerges from Samudra Manthan
— Vishnu Purana —
Dadi: "Guddu beta, do you know how Goddess Lakshmi came to be with Lord Vishnu?"
Guddu: "Weren't they always together?"
Dadi: "No, beta! She emerged from the ocean during the famous churning - Samudra Manthan - and CHOSE Vishnu from among all the gods and demons!"
Guddu: "She got to choose? Tell me the whole story!"
Dadi: "It began with a curse. Indra, the king of gods, was traveling on his elephant when sage Durvasa gave him a magical garland. But Indra, in his arrogance, carelessly placed it on the elephant's trunk."
Guddu: "That doesn't sound respectful..."
Dadi: "The elephant threw it down! Durvasa was so insulted that he cursed Indra and all the gods to lose their power and fortune."
Guddu: "Even Lakshmi left?"
Dadi: "She went to live in the ocean of milk. Without her, the gods grew weak. The demons defeated them and took over heaven!"
Guddu: "That's terrible!"
Dadi: "Desperate, the gods went to Lord Vishnu for help. He said, "You must churn the cosmic ocean to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality. But you'll need the demons' help - it's too big a task alone.""
Guddu: "Work WITH their enemies?"
Dadi: "A temporary alliance! They used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Gods held the tail, demons held the head."
Guddu: "What came out?"
Dadi: "First, terrible poison - Halahala - that could destroy everything! Lord Shiva had to swallow it to save creation. That's why his throat is blue!"
Guddu: "Then good things?"
Dadi: "Amazing things! The divine cow Kamadhenu. The wish-fulfilling tree. Dancing apsaras. The moon god Chandra. And then..."
Guddu: "Lakshmi?"
Dadi: "She rose from the foam of the ocean, radiant as the morning sun, holding a lotus! The gods and demons stopped churning - they couldn't stop staring at her beauty."
Guddu: "What did she do?"
Dadi: "She looked around at everyone present - powerful gods, mighty demons, all wanting her favor. The apsaras danced for her and gave her a garland."
Guddu: "To put on the one she chose?"
Dadi: "Yes! And her eyes found Lord Vishnu. His twinkling eyes, his gentle smile, his calm presence among all the chaos - she saw something special."
Guddu: "She chose him!"
Dadi: "She garlanded Vishnu right there, in front of everyone! The ocean god, as her father, officially gave her in marriage. Brahma performed the wedding rituals."
Guddu: "A wedding right after being born!"
Dadi: "Lakshmi climbed onto Vishnu's chest and made that her permanent seat. The gods cheered, celestial flowers fell from the sky, and the universe celebrated!"
Guddu: "What about the nectar they were churning for?"
Dadi: "Finally, Dhanvantari emerged carrying the pot of Amrita. But when the demons tried to grab it, Vishnu transformed into Mohini, a beautiful enchantress, and tricked them into giving all the nectar to the gods!"
Guddu: "Clever!"
Dadi: "The demons had helped do all the hard work but got nothing! One demon named Rahu tried to sneak some nectar, but Vishnu's discus cut off his head before he could swallow it. That's why we have eclipses!"
Guddu: "So many things came from one churning!"
Dadi: "Including the most important thing - the reunion of Lakshmi and Vishnu. After this, Vishnu was called "Shreenatha" - beloved of fortune."
Guddu: "Dadi, why did Lakshmi choose Vishnu over everyone else?"
Dadi: "Maybe because he wasn't desperate for her. The gods wanted her power. The demons wanted her glory. Vishnu just... was himself, calm and complete."
Guddu: "So being calm is attractive?"
Dadi: "Being complete within yourself is attractive, beta. Lakshmi represents fortune - and fortune goes to those who don't grab at it desperately, but are worthy of it naturally."
Guddu: "I'll try to be calm like Vishnu!"
Dadi: "And fortune will notice you when you're ready. Now sleep, and may Lakshmi's blessings fill your dreams!"
