Urmila 14-Year Sleep
— Regional Ramayana traditions —
Dadi: "Guddu, tonight's story is about a young boy who pleased Lord Shiva so much that Shiva made him like a son!"
Guddu: "What did he do to please Shiva?"
Dadi: "His devotion was extraordinary. His name was Upamanyu, and it all started because of milk."
Guddu: "Milk?"
Dadi: "When Upamanyu was very young, he asked his mother for milk. But they were poor. His mother couldn't afford real milk - she gave him rice powder mixed with water."
Guddu: "That's not milk!"
Dadi: "Exactly what Upamanyu said! He had tasted real milk at his uncle's house and knew the difference. His mother cried at her poverty."
Guddu: "That's so sad."
Dadi: "But little Upamanyu said something amazing: "Don't cry, mother. I will pray to Lord Shiva for milk!" His mother, moved by his faith, taught him a sacred mantra."
Guddu: "And he prayed?"
Dadi: "He went to the Himalayas, made a clay Shiva lingam, and began intense worship. He lived on nothing but air! Day and night, he chanted "Namah Shivaya.""
Guddu: "Just air? For how long?"
Dadi: "For months and months. Demons tried to scare him, but he ignored them completely. His mind was fixed only on Shiva."
Guddu: "Did Shiva come?"
Dadi: "First, Lord Shiva wanted to test him. He disguised himself as Indra, the king of gods, and appeared before Upamanyu."
Guddu: "A test!"
Dadi: ""Young boy," the fake Indra said, "I'm impressed by your devotion. Ask me for any boon!" But Upamanyu only wanted one thing."
Guddu: "What?"
Dadi: ""I want devotion to Shiva," he said. The fake Indra tried to discourage him: "Why worship Shiva? He's covered in ashes, lives in cremation grounds, surrounded by ghosts. Worship me instead!""
Guddu: "That's disrespectful!"
Dadi: "Upamanyu was furious! "How dare you insult Lord Shiva! You will die for this!" He summoned a divine weapon and launched it at Indra!"
Guddu: "He attacked the king of gods?"
Dadi: "At that moment, Shiva revealed His true form - radiant, beautiful, with Goddess Parvati beside Him. "Well done, my son! Your devotion cannot be shaken by temptation!""
Guddu: "It was Shiva all along!"
Dadi: "And what blessings He gave! He adopted Upamanyu as His son. He gave him the Milk Ocean - an endless source of milk! He gave him eternal youth and wisdom."
Guddu: "He got more than just milk!"
Dadi: "Much more! He asked for milk and received divinity. That's how God works, beta. When you ask with pure heart, you don't just get what you asked for - you get more than you imagined."
Guddu: "All from wanting milk?"
Dadi: "It wasn't really about milk. It was about faith. Upamanyu trusted that God would provide. He faced temptation and stood firm. He was offered something easier - worship of Indra - and refused."
Guddu: "He stayed loyal to Shiva."
Dadi: "And that loyalty was rewarded beyond measure. Later, even Lord Krishna came to Upamanyu for guidance on how to please Shiva!"
Guddu: "Krishna asked him for help?"
Dadi: "Yes! The boy who wanted milk became a teacher of gods. That's the power of unwavering devotion, Guddu. Stay true to what you believe, even when offered shortcuts, and see what doors open."
