Liberation of the Cows from Valas Cave

Rig Veda, Mandala VI, Hymn 39

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi**: "Come sit by me, Guddu beta. Tonight I will tell you a very ancient story - about lost cows, brave sages, and how light was returned to the world."

Guddu**: "Lost cows, Dadi? Did someone steal them?"

Dadi**: "Yes, beta! Long ago, in Vedic times, there was a demon named Vala. His name means 'enclosure' - because he locked things away. And you know what he hid inside a dark cave?"

Guddu**: "The cows?"

Dadi**: "Not just any cows! These were special cows that represented light, knowledge, and consciousness itself. Without them, the world was in darkness. The Panis - a group of demons - had stolen all the precious treasures and hidden them deep inside Vala's cave."

Guddu**: "That's terrible! Who went to save them?"

Dadi**: "The Angirasa Rishis - powerful sages who could speak mantras so powerful they could move mountains. They searched everywhere for the lost cows. They knew they needed help, so they called upon Lord Indra, the king of gods."

Guddu**: "Did Indra come with his thunderbolt?"

Dadi**: "He did! But first, they sent a messenger - a divine dog named Sarama - to talk to the Panis. She said, 'Return what you stole!' But the Panis laughed and refused."

Guddu**: "Then what happened, Dadi?"

Dadi**: "Then came the real power, beta. Brihaspati, the divine priest, chanted such sacred mantras that the stone cave cracked open! Indra with his thunderbolt smashed the rock. The Angirasa Rishis entered the cave and drove the cows upward - back into the world!"

Guddu**: "So the light came back?"

Dadi**: "Yes! You see, Guddu, the word 'go' in Sanskrit means both 'cow' and 'light.' This story teaches us that when we lose our inner light - when darkness, confusion, or ignorance takes over - we need sacred knowledge and divine help to find it again."

Guddu**: "Like when I feel confused about something and then I understand?"

Dadi**: "Exactly, my clever boy! Every time you learn something new, every time understanding dawns in your mind - that's like liberating cows from the cave. You're bringing light back into your world."

Guddu**: "The rishis were so brave to go into that dark cave!"

Dadi**: "They were. And their weapon wasn't just Indra's thunderbolt - it was the power of truth, of sacred mantras, of right intention. These can break open any darkness, beta. Remember that when you face difficulties in life. The light is always there, sometimes just hidden - and faith, knowledge, and courage can always bring it back."

Guddu**: "I'll remember, Dadi. But one question - are there still dark caves with hidden light today?"

Dadi**: *smiling* "Every heart that forgets its true nature, every mind clouded by wrong thinking - that's a cave, beta. And every teacher, every holy book, every moment of clarity - those are the Indras and Angirasa Rishis of our time, helping to release the light. Now, time for sleep. May your dreams be filled with light!"

Guddu**: "Goodnight Dadi. Tomorrow, tell me another story?"

Dadi**: "Always, my child. Always."
