Sudama and Krishna
— Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 10, Chapters 80-81 —
Dadi: "Guddu, tonight I'll tell you one of the most beautiful stories about friendship - the story of Sudama and Krishna."
Guddu: "Were they friends?"
Dadi: "The closest of friends! They studied together as children in their guru Sandipani Muni's ashram. But their lives took very different paths. Krishna became the Lord of Dwaraka, wealthy and powerful. Sudama remained a poor brahmin, barely able to feed his family."
Guddu: "That's sad. Why didn't he ask Krishna for help?"
Dadi: "That's exactly what his wife kept suggesting! 'Your childhood friend is the Lord of Dwaraka. The goddess Lakshmi herself is his wife. Why don't you go to him? He could easily help us!'"
Guddu: "What did Sudama say?"
Dadi: "He was reluctant. He didn't want to ask for material things. But he thought, 'At least I'll get to see my dear friend again. That alone would be the highest blessing.' So he agreed to go."
Guddu: "What gift did he take?"
Dadi: "His wife wanted to give something, but they were so poor. She went to other brahmins and begged for a little parched rice - poha - just four handfuls. She wrapped it in a torn cloth. That was all they had."
Guddu: "Poha for the Lord of the Universe?"
Dadi: "*smiling* It was given with love, beta. That's what mattered. Sudama walked for days, nervous and wondering, 'How will I even get past the palace guards looking like this?'"
Guddu: "He was shabby?"
Dadi: "Thin from hunger, clothes worn and patched. But when he reached Krishna's magnificent palace, something extraordinary happened. Before he could even announce himself, Krishna came running out!"
Guddu: "Krishna came to HIM?"
Dadi: "Krishna leaped from his queen's bed, rushed past all the guards, and embraced Sudama with tears streaming down his face! He personally washed his poor friend's dusty feet, anointed him with sandalwood, offered incense and lamps. His queen Rukmini herself fanned Sudama with a royal fan!"
Guddu: "The poor brahmin was treated like a king!"
Dadi: "Everyone in the palace was shocked. 'Who is this shabby man that our Lord treats with such intense love?' But Krishna saw only his childhood friend, his study partner, his beloved companion."
Guddu: "Did they talk about old times?"
Dadi: "For hours! Krishna reminded Sudama of their school days - once when their guru sent them to fetch firewood and a terrible storm came. They got lost in the forest and had to spend the whole night clinging to each other for warmth until their teacher found them at dawn."
Guddu: "That sounds scary!"
Dadi: "But they survived it together. That's what friendship is - sharing troubles, not just good times. Then Krishna asked, 'My friend, what gift have you brought me?'"
Guddu: "The poha! Did Sudama show it?"
Dadi: "He was SO embarrassed! He tried to hide the torn cloth behind his back. How could he offer a few handfuls of cheap rice to the Lord of the Universe?"
Guddu: "What happened?"
Dadi: "Krishna KNEW what Sudama was hiding. He playfully snatched the bundle and opened it. When he saw the humble poha, his eyes lit up with genuine delight!"
Guddu: "He was happy about POHA?"
Dadi: "He declared, 'These rice grains satisfy me and the whole universe that I am!' And he began eating with such joy! He ate one handful, then reached for a second..."
Guddu: "Then what?"
Dadi: "Rukmini gently stopped his hand. 'One handful is enough, my Lord,' she said. 'This single gift is sufficient to grant your friend prosperity in this world and the next.'"
Guddu: "She knew something was happening?"
Dadi: "Divine things were already in motion. Sudama stayed the night feeling he had reached heaven just from this visit. The next morning, Krishna honored him as he departed - but gave him no wealth, no gifts, nothing material."
Guddu: "Krishna didn't help his poor friend?!"
Dadi: "It seemed that way! Sudama walked home thinking, 'I didn't ask for anything, and Krishna didn't offer anything. But just seeing him was blessing enough.' He was completely at peace."
Guddu: "Then what happened when he got home?"
Dadi: "He couldn't find his home!"
Guddu: "What?!"
Dadi: "Where his humble hut had stood, there were now magnificent palaces! Gardens with blooming lotuses, crystal ponds, beautiful attendants! His wife came out dressed in fine silks and jewels, looking like Lakshmi herself!"
Guddu: "Krishna transformed everything!"
Dadi: "Without saying a word, without making a big show, Krishna had blessed his friend with everything - and more importantly, with the wisdom to use it rightly. Sudama understood immediately what had happened."
Guddu: "Why did Krishna do it secretly?"
Dadi: "*thoughtfully* Krishna later explained that if he had announced the gift, Sudama might have become attached to wealth. By giving silently, he let his friend discover it naturally, with gratitude rather than expectation."
Guddu: "Dadi, what's the lesson?"
Dadi: "Many lessons, beta. That true friendship doesn't depend on wealth or status. That God values the love behind a gift, not its price. That sincere devotion, even with just a handful of rice, can move the universe. And that sometimes blessings come in ways we don't expect."
Guddu: "*yawning* I want a friend like Krishna."
Dadi: "Then BE a friend like Sudama first - loving, honest, never demanding. The Krishnas of your life will find you. Now sleep, and may all your friendships be blessed."
Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi. May I always give with love like Sudama."
Dadi: "And may you always receive with grace. Goodnight, my friend."
