Rameshwaram - Ramas Shiva Worship

Shiva Purana; Ramayana; Skanda Purana

Dadi: "Guddu, do you know why the temple at Rameshwaram is so special? It's the place where Lord Rama himself prayed to Lord Shiva!"

Guddu: "Rama prayed to Shiva? But aren't they from different... sides?"

Dadi: "Ha! That's what many people think. But this story teaches us something beautiful about our gods - they are all one family, and they respect each other deeply."

Guddu: "What happened at Rameshwaram?"

Dadi: "After Rama had won the war against Ravana and rescued Sita, the sages came to him with serious news. "Rama," they said, "you have killed Ravana. But do you know who Ravana was?""

Guddu: "A demon king?"

Dadi: "Yes, but more than that - Ravana was also a Brahmin, a great scholar who knew all the Vedas. By killing him, Rama had committed the sin of Brahmahatya - the killing of a learned one. He needed to purify himself."

Guddu: "But Rama was doing the right thing! He was saving Sita!"

Dadi: "True, beta. But in our tradition, even necessary actions have consequences. The sages advised Rama to worship Lord Shiva to wash away the sin. So Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, went to the very southern tip of India - the place closest to Lanka."

Guddu: "Did he find a temple there?"

Dadi: "No, there was no temple yet! Rama needed to install a Shiva Linga - the sacred symbol of Shiva - and worship it. But he wanted the biggest, most special Linga possible. So he sent Hanuman to the Himalayas to bring one."

Guddu: "Hanuman went all the way to the mountains?"

Dadi: "Yes! But here's the problem - the auspicious time for worship was approaching quickly. Hanuman was fast, but even he couldn't return in time."

Guddu: "Oh no! What did they do?"

Dadi: "Sita had an idea. She gathered sand from the seashore and, with her own hands, made a Shiva Linga from the sand. They used this to begin the worship."

Guddu: "Sand? But wouldn't it fall apart?"

Dadi: "That's the miracle, beta! The sand Linga stayed firm because it was made with such devotion. And then, just as the worship was finishing, Hanuman arrived with a beautiful stone Linga from the Himalayas."

Guddu: "Poor Hanuman! He must have felt bad that they didn't use his."

Dadi: "He was very upset! He had flown so far, so fast, all for nothing. But Rama, in his wisdom, found a beautiful solution. He installed Hanuman's Linga right next to Sita's and named it the Vishwalingam."

Guddu: "So both Lingas are there?"

Dadi: "Yes! And here's the touching part - Rama decreed that pilgrims must worship Hanuman's Vishwalingam FIRST, before worshipping the Ramalingam made by Sita. This way, Hanuman's devotion is always honored."

Guddu: "That's so sweet of Rama!"

Dadi: "Both Lingas remain in the Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameshwaram to this day. Millions of people visit every year. Do you know what the name "Rameshwaram" means?"

Guddu: "Ram... eshwara... Lord of Rama?"

Dadi: "Exactly! It means "Lord of Rama" - and it refers to Shiva! The name itself tells us that Lord Vishnu's avatar worshipped Lord Shiva."

Guddu: "So they're not rivals at all!"

Dadi: "Not at all. This story teaches us that in our tradition, there's no competition between gods. Rama worshipping Shiva shows that true devotees don't choose sides. They see the divine in all forms."

Guddu: "Dadi, do people who worship Shiva and people who worship Vishnu fight sometimes?"

Dadi: "Sadly, some do. But stories like this remind us that such fighting misses the point entirely. If Rama himself bowed to Shiva, why should his followers think themselves superior? If Shiva blessed Rama, why should Shiva's followers disrespect Vishnu?"

Guddu: "We should all just worship together!"

Dadi: "That's the wisdom of Rameshwaram, beta. The temple stands at the very tip of India, where the land meets the sea, as a reminder - God is one, whether we call Him Vishnu or Shiva or by any other name. The waves that wash those shores don't ask which god made them. They just flow, together, as one ocean."
