Hanuman's Birth and the Curse - Why He Forgot His Powers

Valmiki Ramayana, Various Puranas

Dadi: "Guddu, did you know that Hanuman forgot he had powers?"

Guddu: "Forgot? How can you forget something like that?"

Dadi: "It's a beautiful story about why forgetting was actually the greatest gift he ever received. Let me start from the beginning."

Guddu: "His birth?"

Dadi: "Even before that. Hanuman's mother Anjana was once an apsara - a celestial nymph - cursed to live on earth as a vanara. The curse would lift only when she bore a son who was an incarnation of Lord Shiva."

Guddu: "So Hanuman is actually Shiva?"

Dadi: "An incarnation of Shiva, yes. Anjana married Kesari, a mighty vanara chief, and prayed to Shiva for years. At the same time, King Dasharatha was performing a fire sacrifice to obtain sons. Divine pudding emerged from the fire."

Guddu: "The payasam that gave Dasharatha his sons!"

Dadi: "A kite snatched a portion and flew across the sky. The Wind God Vayu carried that portion into Anjana's hands. She ate it. Hanuman was born - son of Anjana and Kesari by family, son of Vayu by divine gift, incarnation of Shiva. Three fathers, one extraordinary child."

Guddu: "That's amazing!"

Dadi: "From birth, he was special. When he was hungry and saw the rising sun, he thought it was a ripe fruit. So he leaped toward it - an infant flying across the sky toward the sun!"

Guddu: "*laughs* He tried to eat the sun?"

Dadi: "This was the day of a solar eclipse. Rahu, the demon supposed to swallow the sun, saw this baby monkey racing him. He complained to Indra, king of the gods."

Guddu: "Uh oh."

Dadi: "Indra threw his thunderbolt. It struck Hanuman on the jaw - "hanu" - giving him his name forever. The child fell unconscious."

Guddu: "Poor baby Hanuman!"

Dadi: "Vayu was furious. His son had been attacked! So he withdrew ALL wind from the universe."

Guddu: "All of it?"

Dadi: "No one could breathe. The three worlds suffocated. Gods and demons gasped for air. Even Brahma had to intervene. "Vayu, release the wind. We will bless your son.""

Guddu: "What blessings did he get?"

Dadi: "From Brahma - immunity from the Brahmastra. From Indra - the ability to choose his own death. From Varuna - immunity from water. From Agni - immunity from fire. From Surya - vast wisdom. From Yama - immunity from death in battle. He became more powerful than almost any being in creation."

Guddu: "So why did he need to forget?"

Dadi: "*thoughtfully* Because powers in a child are dangerous. Little Hanuman played pranks on forest sages - stealing their ritual items, disturbing their meditations. They couldn't punish him; he was too powerful."

Guddu: "So the sages cursed him!"

Dadi: "But it was a curse of mercy. "You will forget your powers. You will not remember what you can do until someone reminds you at the crucial moment." This protected the world from an immature god - and protected Hanuman from himself."

Guddu: "He grew up thinking he was ordinary?"

Dadi: "Just a regular vanara. That's why, years later, when the monkey army faced the ocean and needed someone to leap across, Hanuman sat quietly. He had forgotten he could do it."

Guddu: "Who reminded him?"

Dadi: "Jambavan, the ancient bear who remembered everything. He said: "Son of Vayu, you have forgotten yourself. You leaped for the sun as a child. This ocean is nothing to you. Remember who you are!""

Guddu: "And his powers came back?"

Dadi: "Instantly. The memory returned. The power awakened. And Hanuman became himself again."

Guddu: "But why was forgetting a gift?"

Dadi: "*hugs him* Because the years of forgetting taught him humility. He learned to serve before he could command. When his strength finally awakened, it was in service of Rama - not his own ego. If he had known his powers all along, he might have become a tyrant instead of a devotee."

Guddu: "The god who remembers too early becomes a tyrant. The god who remembers at the right moment becomes a servant."

Dadi: "Exactly, beta. Hanuman remembered at exactly the right moment - when Rama needed him to. The curse was actually the greatest blessing. Now rest, my wise one."

Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi. I'll remember to be humble with whatever powers I have."

Dadi: "That's the spirit of Hanuman himself. Sweet dreams."
