Lahiri Mahasaya Meets Babaji in the Himalayas
— Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda —
Dadi: "Guddu beta, tonight I'll tell you about a meeting in the Himalayas that changed the world of yoga forever."
Guddu: "Was it between two famous gurus?"
Dadi: "Yes! But one of them didn't know the other existed until that very day. It happened in 1861, to a man named Lahiri Mahasaya."
Guddu: "What kind of name is Mahasaya?"
Dadi: "It means "great-minded one" - a title of respect. Lahiri was a simple government accountant, working in an office. Not a sage, not a saint - just a regular man with a job."
Guddu: "An accountant became a yoga master?"
Dadi: "That's the miracle! He was thirty-three years old, working in Danapur, when he got transferred to Ranikhet in the mountains. One day, while exploring the hills, he heard someone calling his name."
Guddu: "Who was calling him?"
Dadi: "The voice led him to a cave, where a yogi was waiting - a yogi who looked strangely like Lahiri himself! The yogi said, "Welcome back.""
Guddu: ""Back"? Had they met before?"
Dadi: "In a previous life! The yogi was Babaji - an immortal master said to have lived for thousands of years. When he touched Lahiri's forehead, memories came flooding back. Lahiri had been his disciple in a past incarnation!"
Guddu: "Past life memories? That's amazing!"
Dadi: "Babaji explained that he had arranged Lahiri's transfer through telepathic influence. He had literally moved government officials with his mind to bring his old student back!"
Guddu: "He can control people's minds?"
Dadi: "He can influence circumstances in ways we don't understand. And then he showed Lahiri something extraordinary - to prove that physical reality is more flexible than we think."
Guddu: "What did he show?"
Dadi: "A golden palace appeared in the mountains - decorated with jewels, glowing with light! A companion explained: "The whole cosmos is a materialized thought of the Creator. Enlightened beings can similarly solidify cosmic energy through will.""
Guddu: "He CREATED a palace from nothing?!"
Dadi: "And then it vanished, having served its purpose. Everything material, Babaji was teaching, is temporary - a projection of consciousness."
Guddu: "What did Lahiri want to do? Stay in the mountains forever?"
Dadi: "That's what you'd expect, right? But Babaji had different instructions. He told Lahiri to return to his regular life - his job, his family - and teach yoga from there."
Guddu: "Go back to being an accountant?!"
Dadi: "Yes! Babaji said Lahiri should be a model of the "ideal yogi-householder" - proving that you don't need to renounce the world to achieve enlightenment."
Guddu: "You can be spiritual AND have a normal life?"
Dadi: "That was the revolutionary teaching. Babaji initiated Lahiri in Kriya Yoga - an ancient science of breath and meditation - and told him to teach it to anyone who sincerely sought it."
Guddu: "Did Lahiri really go back to his office job?"
Dadi: "He worked as an accountant until retirement! But mornings and evenings, he taught meditation. Students came from everywhere - they found an enlightened master living in a regular house, going to a regular job."
Guddu: "That's so different from what I imagined yogis to be!"
Dadi: "Lahiri Mahasaya became one of the most important figures in modern yoga. His lineage spread around the world. And it all started because an accountant followed a voice in the mountains."
Guddu: "Dadi, does that mean I can be spiritual even while studying for exams and playing with friends?"
Dadi: "Especially then, beta! Lahiri's message is that sacred and ordinary aren't separate. The person who meditates but also does homework, who prays but also plays - that's the balanced path."
Guddu: "I like that! No running away to caves!"
Dadi: "(laughing) Unless caves call to you someday! But for now, be like Lahiri - present where you are, open to where you're called. Now sleep, and may your path unfold naturally."
Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi. I'll dream about meeting mysterious teachers!"
Dadi: "They may be closer than you think, beta. Sweet dreams!"
