Ganesha Gets Elephant Head

Shiva Purana

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu beta, have you ever wondered why Lord Ganesha has an elephant's head?"

Guddu: "I always wanted to know that, Dadi! He's the only god with an animal head."

Dadi: "Then let me tell you the story. It all began with Mother Parvati, who wanted to take a nice, long bath in peace."

Guddu: "That sounds normal."

Dadi: "Yes, but in those days, Lord Shiva would often come and go without warning. Parvati wanted someone to guard her door while she bathed. So she did something magical."

Guddu: "What did she do?"

Dadi: "She scraped the turmeric paste from her body - you know, the kind we use for good skin? - and with her divine powers, she made a beautiful boy from it!"

Guddu: "She made a boy from turmeric paste?"

Dadi: "From turmeric and her own divine energy, beta. This boy was handsome and strong, and the moment he opened his eyes, he looked at Parvati and said, "Mother, what can I do for you?""

Guddu: "Aww, he was devoted right from the start!"

Dadi: "Parvati smiled and said, "My dear son, I'm going to bathe. Please stand at this door and don't let anyone in - no matter who they are.""

Guddu: "And the boy listened?"

Dadi: "He listened very carefully. He stood at that door like the bravest guard in the world. And then... Lord Shiva came home."

Guddu: "Uh oh."

Dadi: "Shiva had been away meditating for a long time. He didn't know Parvati had created a son. He walked up to his own home, and there was this strange boy blocking the door!"

Guddu: "What did the boy do?"

Dadi: "He did exactly what his mother told him. "Stop! You cannot enter. Mother is bathing." The boy stood firm, arms crossed."

Guddu: "But it was Lord Shiva! Couldn't he just go in?"

Dadi: "Shiva was surprised. Then angry. Who was this child telling him - the lord of the universe - that he couldn't enter his own home? "Step aside, boy," he said. But the child refused."

Guddu: "He was very brave!"

Dadi: "Or very obedient to his mother. They began to fight. And Shiva, in his anger, not knowing this was his own son... he cut off the boy's head."

Guddu: "*gasps* Oh no!"

Dadi: "*nods sadly* When Parvati came out and saw what had happened, her grief shook the heavens. "My son!" she cried. "You killed my son! Bring him back to life, or I will destroy everything!""

Guddu: "Was she really that upset?"

Dadi: "A mother who loses her child, beta - there is no greater pain. Shiva realized what he had done. He had killed his own son without knowing it. He promised Parvati he would fix everything."

Guddu: "How could he fix it without the boy's head?"

Dadi: "Shiva sent his attendants, the ganas, running in all directions. "Bring me the head of the first living being you find facing north," he commanded."

Guddu: "Why facing north?"

Dadi: "North is the direction of wisdom and spiritual growth in our tradition. And the first creature they found facing north was... an elephant."

Guddu: "So they brought an elephant's head?"

Dadi: "They did. With great care and divine power, Lord Shiva placed the elephant's head on the boy's body. Then he breathed life into him. And the boy woke up - but now with the wise, gentle face of an elephant."

Guddu: "That's how Ganesha got his head!"

Dadi: "Yes, beta. And Shiva was so sorry for what had happened that he gave Ganesha the greatest honor of all. He said, "From this day, before any puja, before any ceremony, before worshipping any other god - people must first worship Ganesha.""

Guddu: "That's why we pray to Ganesha first!"

Dadi: "Always first. And he made Ganesha the leader of all his attendants - the "Lord of the Ganas." That's what "Ganesha" means."

Guddu: "Dadi, the elephant head is actually special, isn't it?"

Dadi: "Very special. Elephants are wise and have wonderful memories. They're patient and strong. They can clear paths through the thickest jungle. All these qualities belong to Ganesha too - he removes obstacles from our lives."

Guddu: "And he got all this because he was obedient to his mother?"

Dadi: "*smiles* He followed her instructions without question, even against the lord of the universe. That kind of devotion is rare, beta. And sometimes, terrible things happen that we don't understand. But they can lead to something even greater."

Guddu: "Like Ganesha becoming the most loved god!"

Dadi: "Exactly. Every Ganesh Chaturthi, millions of people bring Ganesha statues into their homes. He's the remover of obstacles, the god of new beginnings. And it all started with a boy made of turmeric, guarding his mother's door."

Guddu: "I love Ganesha, Dadi."

Dadi: "*hugs him* He loves you too, beta. And remember - when you're loyal and devoted, even difficult times can lead to blessings you never imagined."
