Ganesha vs Kartikeya - The Great Race

Skanda Purana

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, if someone told you to race around the whole world, would you try to run?"

Guddu: "That would take forever, Dadi! My legs would fall off!"

Dadi: "*laughs* Well, let me tell you about a famous race between two brothers - Ganesha and Kartikeya - and how the one who didn't run actually won."

Guddu: "How can you win without running?"

Dadi: "Listen and learn, beta. One day, the mischievous sage Narada visited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He brought a very special gift - a golden mango."

Guddu: "A golden mango? Was it made of real gold?"

Dadi: "It was a divine mango, beta. Narada said, "Whoever eats this mango will gain extraordinary wisdom and power. But there's a catch - only one person can eat it.""

Guddu: "Uh oh. And Shiva had two sons..."

Dadi: "Exactly! Ganesha with his elephant head, and Kartikeya, the handsome warrior god. Parvati loved both her sons equally. How could she choose?"

Guddu: "Maybe cut it in half?"

Dadi: "Narada said no - it had to be eaten whole by one person. So Lord Shiva announced a contest. "My sons, whoever circles the universe three times and returns first will win the mango.""

Guddu: "Three times around the universe?! That's huge!"

Dadi: "Kartikeya jumped up excitedly. He had a beautiful peacock as his vehicle - a peacock that could fly through space itself! "Watch me, Mother!" he called, and off he flew, racing through the stars."

Guddu: "What about Ganesha? He only has a tiny mouse!"

Dadi: "That's the thing, beta. Ganesha looked at his little mouse, then looked at his round belly, and thought very carefully. He couldn't race around the universe on a mouse. That was impossible."

Guddu: "So he gave up?"

Dadi: "*smiles mysteriously* Not at all. While everyone watched Kartikeya disappear into the sky, Ganesha calmly walked up to his parents. Then he slowly walked around them. Once. Twice. Three times. With each circle, he bowed respectfully."

Guddu: "He walked around his parents? But they said the universe!"

Dadi: "Ah, but here's where Ganesha was clever. When Shiva asked what he was doing, Ganesha said, "Father, for me, my parents ARE my universe. Everything in all of creation is contained in you and Mother. By going around you three times, I have circled the universe three times.""

Guddu: "*eyes wide* Wow! That's so smart!"

Dadi: "Shiva and Parvati were deeply moved. Their son understood something profound - that the love of parents holds everything within it."

Guddu: "What happened when Kartikeya came back?"

Dadi: "Poor Kartikeya! He flew through galaxies, past stars and planets, around the entire cosmos three times. He was exhausted but proud. "I'm back! Where's my mango?" he announced."

Guddu: "And then?"

Dadi: "Then he saw Ganesha, calmly eating the golden mango. Kartikeya was confused. "How? I flew around the universe! You can't even fly!""

Guddu: "What did Ganesha say?"

Dadi: "Ganesha just smiled. Lord Shiva explained: "True wisdom, my son, is not about speed or strength. Ganesha understood that his parents represent all of creation. His devotion was the real victory.""

Guddu: "Was Kartikeya angry?"

Dadi: "At first, he felt hurt and embarrassed. He had worked so hard, traveled so far, and still lost. But then he understood the lesson. Speed isn't everything. Thinking cleverly and loving deeply matter more."

Guddu: "Did Kartikeya forgive Ganesha?"

Dadi: "He did, but he also wanted time alone to think. He went to a mountain called Palani Hill in South India and became a great sage there. Even today, people climb 689 steps to visit his temple and honor his transformation from proud warrior to wise teacher."

Guddu: "Dadi, I think I understand. Parents are so important that loving them is like loving the whole world."

Dadi: "*hugs him tightly* That's exactly right, my wise boy. Your mother and father - they are your first universe. Everything you know, everything you are, started with them."

Guddu: "So when I help Mommy in the kitchen or listen to Papa, it's like I'm doing something really big?"

Dadi: "The biggest thing, beta. Ganesha won a race around the universe without taking a single step into the sky. Because he knew where his real treasure was - right there, in front of him."

Guddu: "I like Ganesha, Dadi. He's clever AND loving."

Dadi: "And that's the best combination, my little one. Now, speaking of loving your parents - go give your mother a hug and help her with dinner. That's your race around the universe for today!"

Guddu: "*runs off* I'm going to win the mango!"
