The Death of Kansa - Krishna Fulfills the Prophecy

Bhagavata Purana - Book 10, Chapters 42-44

Dadi: "Guddu beta, today I'll tell you the thrilling story of how Krishna finally confronted the tyrant who had tried to kill him since the day he was born."

Guddu: "Kansa! The evil uncle!"

Dadi: "Yes! After all those years in Vrindavan, it was time for Krishna to face his destiny. And it happened through an invitation - a trap disguised as hospitality."

Guddu: "What kind of trap?"

Dadi: "Kansa sent a fancy invitation to Vrindavan. "The king invites the cowherds to a grand festival in Mathura! Wrestling matches! Celebrations! Bring your finest butter and milk!""

Guddu: "But Kansa wanted to kill Krishna, not celebrate with him!"

Dadi: "Exactly. The invitation was delivered by Akrura, one of Kansa's ministers. But here's the interesting part - Akrura was actually a devotee of Krishna! When he saw the Divine Lord in person, he wept with joy."

Guddu: "So why did he bring the invitation?"

Dadi: "Akrura told Krishna honestly, "Kansa plans to kill you. He has champion wrestlers waiting. A mad elephant at the arena gate. Soldiers ready to murder you if everything else fails.""

Guddu: "And Krishna still went?!"

Dadi: "Krishna smiled and said, "The prophecy must be fulfilled. Take us to Mathura, uncle. My brother Balarama and I are curious to see our birthplace.""

Guddu: "He wasn't scared at all?"

Dadi: "Not even a little. But the people of Vrindavan were heartbroken. The gopis wept, the cowherds pleaded. Mother Yashoda held Krishna as if she could keep him forever. But the boy who had grown up stealing butter was now ready to fulfill his destiny."

Guddu: "What happened when they reached Mathura?"

Dadi: "The first obstacle came at the arena gate - a giant elephant named Kuvalayapida, drugged into madness, trained to kill. It charged straight at Krishna!"

Guddu: "What did Krishna do?"

Dadi: "Balarama stepped aside, but Krishna stood firm. When the massive elephant reached him, he grabbed its trunk and threw it backward! The elephant charged again. Krishna dodged between its legs, emerged behind it, and killed it with a single blow. Then he pulled out one of its tusks to use as a weapon."

Guddu: "Krishna killed an elephant with his bare hands?!"

Dadi: "He was the Supreme Lord, beta, appearing as a teenage cowherd. Next came the wrestling arena. It was packed with people - nobles and commoners who had come hoping to see the prophecy unfold."

Guddu: "Where was Kansa?"

Dadi: "Sitting on his throne, flanked by guards, pretending to be confident. But underneath, he was terrified. His champion wrestlers, Chanura and Mushtika, were called into the ring. They were monsters of muscle who had killed opponents by the dozens."

Guddu: "And they had to fight Krishna and Balarama?"

Dadi: "Chanura looked at the two brothers and laughed. "These are children! We cannot fight children - it would be unfair!""

Guddu: "What did Krishna say?"

Dadi: ""Then fight us both together. That should give you a chance.""

Guddu: "*laughs* Krishna was so confident!"

Dadi: "The crowd gasped at his audacity. The match began, but it wasn't really a match - it was a demonstration. Krishna met Chanura's strength with skill, his brutality with precision. Every grab was countered, every strike redirected."

Guddu: "And Balarama?"

Dadi: "He had similar ease with Mushtika. The brothers moved like dancers while their opponents stumbled like puppets. The end came swiftly - Krishna lifted Chanura over his head and threw him to the ground with fatal force. Balarama finished Mushtika just as quickly."

Guddu: "Kansa's champions were dead!"

Dadi: "The crowd erupted. Kansa's face went white. His elephant was dead. His champions were dead. The prophecy was coming true before his eyes."

Guddu: "What did he do?"

Dadi: "He screamed, "Guards! Kill them! Kill them now!" But before anyone could move, Krishna was faster. He leaped from the arena floor to the royal platform - a distance no human could cover - and grabbed Kansa by the hair."

Guddu: "He caught the tyrant!"

Dadi: "He dragged Kansa into the ring, into the dust where his champions lay dead. "For eight children," Krishna said. "For my brothers and sisters you murdered in prison. For the terror you inflicted on Devaki and Vasudeva. For the suffering of your kingdom.""

Guddu: "What did Kansa say?"

Dadi: ""I am your uncle! Show mercy!" And Krishna said something profound: "I am mercy. Death at my hands is liberation, not punishment. By touching me, by dying at my hands, you are freed from your sins.""

Guddu: "Even Kansa was freed?"

Dadi: "Even him. The scriptures say that anyone who dies while thinking of God - even in hatred or fear - achieves liberation. Kansa's soul, purified by contact with the Divine, ascended rather than descended."

Guddu: "What happened to Devaki and Vasudeva?"

Dadi: "Krishna freed them from the prison beneath the palace himself. For the first time in sixteen years, they held their son. For the first time in sixteen years, they were free."

Guddu: "That must have been so emotional!"

Dadi: "Imagine, beta - the baby they had given up that night in the rain, the child they had yearned for all those years, standing before them as their savior."

Guddu: "Did Krishna go back to Vrindavan?"

Dadi: "*shakes head* He couldn't. Kansa had allies who would seek revenge. Krishna stayed in Mathura to protect what he had freed. He was no longer the butter-stealing child of Vrindavan. He was now Krishna the protector, with battles still to fight."

Guddu: "But he missed Vrindavan, didn't he?"

Dadi: "*softly* Always. Part of his heart would forever belong to those forest meadows, to Mother Yashoda, to the gopis and gopas. But his duty called him elsewhere."

Guddu: "What's the lesson, Dadi?"

Dadi: "Many lessons, beta. That destiny cannot be avoided - Kansa tried everything to escape the prophecy and still failed. That evil cannot win against divine purpose. That even in death, contact with God is transformative. And that sometimes, fulfilling our duty means leaving the places and people we love most."

Guddu: "Krishna had to grow up and face his purpose."

Dadi: "As we all must, beta. The childhood of play ends, and the work of our lives begins. But the love and lessons from our childhood stay with us forever."

Guddu: "I understand, Dadi. It's a beautiful and bittersweet story."

Dadi: "That's exactly what it is, mere bacche. Now, shall we have some butter? In honor of the butter thief who became a king-slayer!"

Guddu: "*laughs* Yes! Makhan prasad!"
