Keshi - The Horse Demon
— Bhagavata Purana - Book 10, Chapter 37 —
Dadi: "Guddu beta, you know King Kansa sent many demons to kill baby Krishna. Tonight I'll tell you about the most dangerous one - Keshi, the horse demon!"
Guddu: "A horse demon? Was he like an evil unicorn?"
Dadi: "(laughing) No horn, beta, but much scarier! Keshi was Kansa's champion - the demon he had been saving for when all others failed. Keshi was faster than wind, stronger than elephants, and smart enough to study his prey before striking."
Guddu: "He was smart too?"
Dadi: "That's what made him dangerous. The other demons had charged in blindly. Keshi watched. He learned from their mistakes. He saw how Krishna used their own size against them, how he expanded inside them, how he burned them from within."
Guddu: "So Keshi had a plan?"
Dadi: "He approached Vrindavan at dusk, when the light was tricky. His hooves made no sound - a demon's magic to hide his approach. He was going to catch Krishna by surprise..."
Guddu: "But Krishna can't be surprised!"
Dadi: "Exactly! Krishna was already waiting. "You can stop hiding," he called into the darkness. "I knew before you crossed the forest boundary.""
Guddu: "What did Keshi do?"
Dadi: "He emerged in his full terrifying form - a nightmare horse with a mane like black fire and teeth sharp as swords. But instead of just attacking, he circled Krishna, testing him, looking for weaknesses."
Guddu: "Did Krishna fight back?"
Dadi: "Krishna just stood there, smiling! Keshi grew frustrated. "I'm not like the others," the demon snarled. "I've studied your tricks. The heat, the expansion, the throws - I'm prepared for all of it!""
Guddu: "Was he really prepared?"
Dadi: "He thought so. When Keshi finally attacked, his timing was perfect, his angle was precise. He was going to bite Krishna's head off before he could react!"
Guddu: "Oh no!"
Dadi: "But Krishna did something unexpected. Instead of dodging or running, he thrust his arm INTO Keshi's open mouth!"
Guddu: "INTO his mouth?!"
Dadi: "And then... the arm began to expand. Just like Krishna had expanded inside Aghasura the snake demon, now his single arm grew inside Keshi's jaws, blocking the teeth, filling the throat, and growing and growing!"
Guddu: "Keshi couldn't bite down?"
Dadi: "He couldn't breathe! Krishna said calmly, "You prepared for external attacks. You didn't prepare for internal ones.""
Guddu: "The smart demon wasn't smart enough!"
Dadi: "Being clever is not the same as being wise, beta. Keshi had studied Krishna's tricks but hadn't understood them. The expansion works anywhere - inside a snake, inside a horse's mouth, anywhere Krishna wills it."
Guddu: "What happened to Keshi?"
Dadi: "The arm kept expanding. Keshi's jaw cracked, his skull began to split... and then the demon was no more. His cleverness couldn't save him."
Guddu: "Dadi, why did Kansa keep sending demons? Didn't he realize it was pointless?"
Dadi: "That's a good question, beta! After Keshi died, the sage Narada visited Krishna and said exactly that: "Kansa has few demons left. He'll have to face you himself soon.""
Guddu: "And what did Krishna say?"
Dadi: "He said something important: "I know. The invitation to his wrestling tournament will come soon. He thinks he's preparing a trap. He's actually preparing his own funeral.""
Guddu: "So Krishna knew everything that would happen?"
Dadi: "Always, beta. But here's the beautiful part - Krishna didn't just see himself as an avenger going to punish Kansa. He said, "I grew strong here in Vrindavan. I was loved here. When I face Kansa, I face him as a protector, not just a destroyer. That's the difference between us.""
Guddu: "Protector versus destroyer..."
Dadi: "Keshi destroyed because he was ordered to. Kansa destroyed because he was scared. But Krishna? Everything he did was to protect - his friends, his family, dharma itself. Even destruction can be protection when done for the right reasons."
Guddu: "I want to be a protector, not a destroyer!"
Dadi: "Then protect the weak, stand up for what's right, and always remember why you're fighting. That's Krishna's lesson. Now sleep, little protector!"
