Madalasa - Spiritual Lullabies
— Markandeya Purana, Chapters 16-36 —
Dadi**: "Guddu beta, do you know what a lullaby is?"
Guddu**: "The songs you sing to make me sleep, Dadi!"
Dadi**: "Yes! But have you heard of a mother who sang lullabies so powerful that they made her sons become enlightened sages?"
Guddu**: "Sages from lullabies? Tell me, Dadi!"
Dadi**: "Her name was Madalasa, and she was the queen of King Kuvalayasva. She was not just beautiful - she was a realized yogini, someone who had understood the deepest truths about life."
Guddu**: "What made her special?"
Dadi**: "When her babies cried, other mothers would give toys or sing about the moon. But Madalasa would sing something extraordinary. Listen to what she sang: 'Shuddhosi buddhosi niranjanosi' - meaning 'You are pure, you are consciousness, you are untainted.'"
Guddu**: "That's a strange lullaby!"
Dadi**: "She would sing: 'My child, you are ever pure! You do not have a name - a name is only imaginary. This body made of five elements is not you. Why then do you cry?'"
Guddu**: "But Dadi, babies don't understand such deep things!"
Dadi**: "Ah, but the soul understands, beta! These words sank deep into her children's hearts. She had three sons first - Vikranta, Subahu, and Shatrumardana. From childhood, these lullabies taught them that the world is temporary, that their true self is eternal."
Guddu**: "What happened to them?"
Dadi**: "They had no interest in worldly pleasures when they grew up! One by one, all three took sannyasa - they became wandering monks seeking truth in the forests."
Guddu**: "But then who would be king?"
Dadi**: "Exactly what the king worried about! When their fourth son Alarka was born, the king begged Madalasa: 'Please, sing different lullabies to this one. We need an heir!'"
Guddu**: "Did she change her songs?"
Dadi**: "Being wise, she did. But her new lullabies were equally beautiful! She sang to Alarka about ruling justly, about defeating inner enemies like anger and lust, about using wealth for good, about helping those in trouble."
Guddu**: "So he became a good king?"
Dadi**: "A wonderful king! He married, had sons, performed sacrifices, and ruled righteously - all while keeping God in his heart. Before his parents left for the forest, Madalasa gave Alarka a special ring."
Guddu**: "What kind of ring?"
Dadi**: "She said, 'Son, if you ever face unbearable sorrow, look inside this ring.' The ring contained her final teaching, written inside - a reminder of the eternal truths she had sung since his birth."
Guddu**: "Dadi, both paths seem good - the monks and the king!"
Dadi**: "That's the genius of Madalasa! She understood that different souls have different paths. Some are meant to renounce and seek enlightenment. Others are meant to live in the world but not be of it. Both paths can lead to God."
Guddu**: "I think I want to be like Alarka - live in the world but remember God!"
Dadi**: "And that's perfectly beautiful, beta. Remember what Madalasa taught: whoever you become, whatever you do - never forget your true nature. You are pure consciousness, just playing a role in this world-drama. Now, shall I sing you a lullaby?"
Guddu**: "Yes! The one about being pure!"
Dadi**: *singing softly* "Shuddhosi buddhosi niranjanosi... You are pure, you are consciousness, you are untainted by this world..."
Guddu**: *yawning* "I like that, Dadi..."
Dadi**: "Sleep now, my pure, conscious, untainted child."
