The Shikshashtakam - Eight Verses of Instruction

Chaitanya Charitamrita, Antya Lila, Chapter 20

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, if you could only leave eight sentences to teach the world everything important, what would you say?"

Guddu: "Just eight sentences? That's really hard!"

Dadi: "About 500 years ago, there lived a great saint named Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He traveled across India, teaching and singing the names of God. But he only left behind eight verses - and those eight verses contain all his wisdom."

Guddu: "Only eight verses for his whole teaching?"

Dadi: "They're called the Shikshashtakam - "Eight Instructions." They say that if you really understand these eight verses, you understand the entire path of devotion."

Guddu: "What do they teach?"

Dadi: "Let me tell you the essence of each one, in simple words."

Guddu: "I'm listening!"

Dadi: "The first verse says: Chanting God's name cleans the heart, puts out the fire of suffering, and brings pure joy. Just saying God's name with love is the simplest and most powerful spiritual practice."

Guddu: "That's why people chant mantras?"

Dadi: "Exactly! The second verse says: God's names contain infinite power. And the beautiful thing is - God is so compassionate that He makes His names available to everyone, no matter how unworthy we feel."

Guddu: "Even people who make mistakes can chant?"

Dadi: "Especially them! The third verse teaches the right attitude: Be humbler than a blade of grass. Be more tolerant than a tree. Give respect to everyone, but expect none for yourself. This is how to chant constantly."

Guddu: "Humbler than grass?"

Dadi: "Grass gets stepped on and doesn't complain. Trees give shade and fruit even to those who cut them. That's the level of patience and humility Chaitanya taught."

Guddu: "That's really hard!"

Dadi: "It is. The fourth verse says: I don't want wealth, I don't want beauty, I don't want followers or fame. I only want to serve God - selflessly, without any reward."

Guddu: "Not even wanting heaven?"

Dadi: "Not even that. True devotion wants nothing in return - just the chance to love and serve. The fifth verse says: I am a servant of God's servant, like a tiny particle of dust at the Lord's feet."

Guddu: "A particle of dust?"

Dadi: "It means: I don't claim to be important. I'm just the smallest part of God's family, happy to serve in any way."

Guddu: "These are really humble verses!"

Dadi: "The sixth verse describes what happens when devotion becomes intense. Tears flow like streams, the voice chokes with emotion, the body trembles. The heart becomes so full of love that it overflows."

Guddu: "That sounds beautiful."

Dadi: "The seventh verse is about the pain of separation. When we truly love God but feel distant from Him, every moment feels like an eternity of suffering."

Guddu: "Like missing someone you love?"

Dadi: "Deeply, intensely missing them. And finally, the eighth verse - Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's most powerful teaching: Even if Krishna breaks my heart, even if He is cruel to me, He is still the only one I will worship. My love has no conditions."

Guddu: "He would love God even if God was mean to him?"

Dadi: "That's unconditional love, beta. It doesn't depend on what you receive. It just gives and gives, regardless of response. That's the highest devotion."

Guddu: "I don't know if I could do that..."

Dadi: "Few can, at first. That's why we practice. We start with simple chanting, develop humility, let go of desires for reward, and slowly our love becomes purer."

Guddu: "So these eight verses are like steps?"

Dadi: "Exactly! From cleaning the heart through chanting, to developing the right attitude, to experiencing ecstatic love, to being completely surrendered - it's a complete map of the devotional journey."

Guddu: "And Chaitanya Mahaprabhu lived all this himself?"

Dadi: "He was famous for dancing and singing in spiritual ecstasy. People would see him crying, laughing, and swooning with love for God. He wasn't just teaching - he was demonstrating."

Guddu: "Dadi, can I learn one verse?"

Dadi: "Start with the attitude from verse three: Try to be humble, try to be tolerant, try to respect everyone. Just that one practice will transform your life."

Guddu: "I'll try, Dadi!"

Dadi: "That's all any of us can do - try sincerely. The rest happens by grace. Sweet dreams, mera bachcha. May your heart become clean and full of love."
