Dhanvantari Teaches Ayurveda

Garuda Purana

Dadi: "Guddu, do plants talk to you?"

Guddu: "*laughs* No, Dadi! Plants can't talk!"

Dadi: "Let me tell you what Dhanvantari, the Divine Physician, told the sages about that."

Guddu: "He talked to plants?"

Dadi: "Better than that. Once, some wise sages asked him, "Lord, you've given us the science of healing. But how do we know which plants have which powers?""

Dhanvantari smiled and said, "Come. Walk with me."

Guddu: "A nature walk!"

Dadi: "He took them through the forest and stopped at a humble Tulsi plant. "See how she grows near human homes? She is humanity's friend. Her leaves purify the air. Her presence wards off disease. Lord Vishnu himself considers her sacred.""

Guddu: "We have Tulsi at home!"

Dadi: "Good! Next, Dhanvantari showed them Ashwagandha - "the smell of horse." He said, "Those who take this root gain the energy of stallions. It calms a troubled mind while strengthening a tired body.""

Guddu: "Horse power from a plant!"

Dadi: "Then he stopped at a golden-flowered plant. "Turmeric - the internal sun. She carries fire's purifying power without fire's destruction. Mix her with milk for nighttime, with honey for morning.""

Guddu: "Haldi! Mom puts it in everything!"

Dadi: "She's following Dhanvantari's wisdom! By a stream grew a spreading herb. "Brahmi - named for Brahma himself. She grows near water because she cools the heated mind. Students and scholars especially benefit.""

Guddu: "Is that why you give me Brahmi before exams?"

Dadi: "*winks* Ancient exam prep! Dhanvantari showed them Neem, the bitter cleanser. Ashoka, the grief-remover. Shatavari, which gives strength to women."

Guddu: "There's a plant for everything!"

Dadi: "But here's the most important thing he said. After showing them dozens of healing plants, Dhanvantari paused."

"Remember this - no herb works without proper living. Medicine without discipline is like rain in a desert. It vanishes before it nourishes."

Guddu: "So plants alone aren't enough?"

Dadi: "He said the greatest physician is one who teaches patients to need medicine less. Sleep well, eat simply, move your body, calm your mind - do these things, and herbs become helpers, not necessities."

Guddu: "That's what you always say!"

Dadi: "The old wisdom never changes. Dhanvantari wasn't just handing out plant recipes. He was teaching people to understand the language of nature - that every being has something to teach if we pay attention."

Guddu: "So when he said plants "talk"..."

Dadi: "He meant that nature communicates through effects and patterns. Bitter plants cleanse. Cooling plants calm. Sweet plants nourish. Learn the language, and you can read nature's medicine cabinet."

Guddu: "Can we grow more herbs at home?"

Dadi: "What a wonderful idea! We'll start a little Dhanvantari garden. Each plant will be a teacher."

Guddu: "I'll water them and they'll teach me!"

Dadi: "And maybe, eventually, you'll hear them speak."
