Shivas Grand Marriage Procession

Shiva Purana, Rudra-samhita, Parvati-khanda, Chapter 40

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, have you ever been to a wedding baraat?"

Guddu: "Yes! With the dancing and the horse and the band! It was so fun!"

Dadi: "Well, Lord Shiva's baraat was the most unusual wedding procession in all of cosmic history. Instead of looking grand and handsome, the groom looked like a beggar from a cremation ground!"

Guddu: "*giggling* That doesn't sound like a good groom!"

Dadi: "Oh, but wait till you hear about his wedding party! When word spread that Lord Shiva was getting married to Parvati, EVERYONE wanted to join. And Shiva, being Bholenath - the innocent lord - said yes to all of them."

Guddu: "All of who?"

Dadi: "*counting on fingers* Ghosts, goblins, spirits, demons, ganas with terrifying faces! Some guests had no faces at all. Others had too many faces. Some had no arms; others had eight arms. Some were so fat they could barely walk; others were thin as sticks. Some had eyes everywhere; others were completely eyeless."

Guddu: "*eyes wide* That sounds like a monster parade, not a wedding!"

Dadi: "And right in the middle of all these frightening creatures sat Shiva on his bull Nandi. He wore tiger skin for clothes. A living snake coiled around his neck like a necklace. White ash covered his body. His hair was wild and matted."

Guddu: "Dadi, was he TRYING to scare the bride's family?"

Dadi: "*laughing* No, beta! That's just who Shiva is. He doesn't care about appearances. He makes no distinction between beautiful and ugly, between gods and ghosts. All beings are equal to him."

Guddu: "But what about the fancy gods?"

Dadi: "Oh, they came too! Lord Vishnu arrived on his eagle Garuda with a great umbrella. Lord Brahma was there. Indra came on his white elephant Airavata. Sage Narada participated. The most powerful gods and the lowest spirits all marched together - because in Shiva's baraat, everyone was welcome."

Guddu: "What did Parvati's mother think?"

Dadi: "*covering mouth to hide laugh* Parvati's mother Mena was SO excited. She had heard that the groom was surrounded by gods, so she thought, 'If even his attendants are divine beings, how handsome Shiva must be!'"

Guddu: "Uh oh..."

Dadi: "She rushed out to see her future son-in-law. And what did she see? A wild man covered in ash, wearing animal skins, with snakes around his neck, surrounded by the most horrifying collection of creatures imaginable!"

Guddu: "*giggling* What did she do?"

Dadi: "She FAINTED! Just collapsed right there! And when they woke her up, she started crying and cursing everyone. 'Who arranged this match?! My beautiful daughter is going to marry THIS?! I won't allow it!'"

Guddu: "Poor Mena!"

Dadi: "The sages had to calm her down. 'Mother Mena,' they explained, 'you're seeing only the outside. Shiva's true nature is the most beautiful thing in creation. He is pure consciousness, pure love, pure divinity. These clothes and companions are just expressions of his freedom.'"

Guddu: "Did she believe them?"

Dadi: "Some stories say Shiva briefly showed her his most handsome form - radiant and glowing. Then she understood that this wild yogi was actually the lord of all creation in disguise."

Guddu: "So the wedding happened?"

Dadi: "It was magnificent! Lord Brahma performed the ceremony. Lord Vishnu organized everything. Gods, sages, and celestial beings filled the pavilion. Heavenly music played. Divine flowers rained from the sky. And the sacred fire that was lit for their wedding?"

Guddu: "What about it?"

Dadi: "It still burns today at a temple called Triyuginarayan. The fire from Shiva and Parvati's wedding has never gone out."

Guddu: "Wow! That's amazing! But Dadi, what's the lesson in this funny story?"

Dadi: "Many lessons, beta. First - don't judge by appearances. The wildest-looking groom was actually the greatest god. Second - true love doesn't care about packaging. Parvati didn't want Shiva because he was handsome; she wanted him because she knew his soul."

Guddu: "And the ghost guests?"

Dadi: "That's the deepest lesson. Shiva welcomes everyone - the frightening and the beautiful, the outcasts and the royalty, the ghosts and the gods. In his presence, there is no high or low. That's why he's called Mahadeva - the Great God - because his love embraces the entire universe without discrimination."

Guddu: "I like that. A wedding where everyone's invited."

Dadi: "Imagine if all weddings were like that, beta. Imagine if we welcomed everyone to our celebrations - not just the 'nice-looking' ones or the important ones, but everyone. That's Shiva's teaching through his baraat."

Guddu: "*yawning* Dadi, if I get married, I'll invite everyone too. Even the scary ones."

Dadi: "*smiling* And they'll feel welcomed, just as Shiva made his strange guests feel welcomed. Now sleep, and dream of the strangest, most wonderful wedding procession ever."

Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi. May my heart be as open as Shiva's!"

Dadi: "May it indeed, my inclusive little boy. Goodnight."
