Tulsidas Releases His Wife - From Attachment to Devotion (Tyaga)

Tulsidas Biography, Historical (16th Century)

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, do you know how Tulsidas met Lord Hanuman?"

Guddu: "Hanuman? He's immortal, right? Did they really meet?"

Dadi: "Yes! Every morning, Tulsidas would go outside the city to answer nature's call. He always carried water with him, and on his way back, he'd pour the leftover water under a particular tree."

Guddu: "Why that tree?"

Dadi: "A ghost lived in that tree - a spirit who was always thirsty! The ghost was grateful for this daily water. One day, he decided to help Tulsidas."

Guddu: "A ghost helped him?"

Dadi: "Tulsidas asked the ghost to help him see Lord Ram. The ghost said, "I can't do that - I don't have that power. But I can tell you about someone who does.""

Guddu: "Hanuman?"

Dadi: "Yes! The ghost said, "Hanuman comes every day to your Ramayana recitation. He's disguised as an old leper with a staff and a cap. He's always the first to arrive and last to leave.""

Guddu: "Hanuman listens to stories about Ram? Of course he would!"

Dadi: "That evening, Tulsidas watched carefully. He noticed an old, sick man in the corner - first to arrive, sitting quietly. After the recitation, Tulsidas followed him into the forest."

Guddu: "Was the old man scared?"

Dadi: "Tulsidas fell at his feet and said, "I know who you really are!" At first, the old man pretended to be annoyed. "Leave me alone!" But Tulsidas wouldn't let go."

Guddu: "He held onto Hanuman's feet?"

Dadi: "Tightly! He begged to see Lord Ram. Finally, moved by such devotion, Hanuman revealed himself. His eyes filled with tears seeing such love for his beloved Ram."

Guddu: "Did Hanuman help him?"

Dadi: "He said, "Go to Chitrakuta. There you will truly see Rama." Tulsidas went immediately and lived in an ashram there. One day, during his daily walk around the holy mountain, he saw two princes on horseback."

Guddu: "Ram and Lakshman?"

Dadi: "Yes! But Tulsidas didn't recognize them. They passed by, and it was only later, with Hanuman's help, that he realized who they were. He was heartbroken - he had missed his chance!"

Guddu: "Oh no!"

Dadi: "Hanuman comforted him: "They will come again tomorrow morning." The next day, two young boys came to Tulsidas's ashram and asked for a tilak of sandalwood paste on their foreheads."

Guddu: "Did he recognize them this time?"

Dadi: "This time, yes! He saw it was Rama and Lakshmana. With trembling hands, he applied the tilak. Then Ram himself took some paste and put a tilak on Tulsidas's forehead!"

Guddu: "God marked him!"

Dadi: "It was the blessing of a lifetime. Then they disappeared. The place where Tulsidas met Hanuman is now the Sankat Mochan Temple in Varanasi."

Guddu: "Can Hanuman still come in disguise?"

Dadi: "People believe Hanuman, who is immortal, still comes disguised wherever Ram's stories are told. Maybe that quiet person at the temple, that humble listener, that old soul who arrives first and leaves last..."

Guddu: "Might be Hanuman!"

Dadi: "Who knows? The point is, beta, God comes in disguise. Hanuman looked like a sick old leper. Ram looked like ordinary princes. Divine help often comes in unexpected packages."

Guddu: "So I should be nice to everyone?"

Dadi: "Because you never know who might be God in disguise!"
