The Tusks That Held the Universe - Varaha's Tenderness

Varaha Purana, Vishnu Purana

✦ ✦ ✦

Dadi: "Guddu, have you seen pictures of Lord Vishnu as a boar?"

Guddu: "A boar? Like a pig?"

Dadi: "A divine boar - Varaha. Tonight I'll tell you the beautiful conversation that happened when He lifted Mother Earth from the cosmic waters."

Guddu: "Why was Earth in the water?"

Dadi: "A demon had dragged her to the bottom of the cosmic ocean. Everything was underwater, all life was drowning. So Lord Vishnu took the form of a magnificent boar - huge and powerful - and dove into the depths."

Guddu: "Did he fight the demon?"

Dadi: "He destroyed the demon Hiranyaksha. But the beautiful part came after - when he lifted Bhudevi, Mother Earth, on his mighty tusks and began rising through the waters."

Guddu: "What happened?"

Dadi: "As the great Boar rose, Earth trembled on His tusks - not from fear, but from overwhelming love. She whispered, "My Lord, you have rescued me so many times across countless ages.""

Guddu: "He saved her before?"

Dadi: ""As Matsya, the fish, You saved me from the great flood. As Kurma, the turtle, You supported the churning that brought forth life's treasures. And now, as this magnificent Boar, You have lifted me from the deepest darkness.""

Guddu: "Three different forms to help her!"

Dadi: "Lord Varaha spoke gently, His voice soft despite His fearsome form: "Dear Earth, you bear all creatures without complaint. You hold mountains, rivers, and forests. You endure being plowed and mined, yet you give only abundance. Your patience teaches even the gods.""

Guddu: "He was praising the Earth!"

Dadi: "Bhudevi replied, "And You, my Lord, teach that strength and gentleness are not opposites. Look how carefully You hold me - Your tusks could pierce mountains, yet they cradle me like a child.""

Guddu: "That's beautiful, Dadi. Big and strong but also gentle."

Dadi: "The sages say that in this moment, suspended between the cosmic waters and the sky, Varaha and Bhudevi spoke about dharma - how beings should live upon the Earth, the balance between taking and giving."

Guddu: "They talked about dharma?"

Dadi: "These teachings became the foundation of righteous living. How to respect the Earth. How to take only what we need. How to give back."

Guddu: "Is that why we should protect the environment?"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta! Mother Earth gives us everything - food, water, air, shelter. Like Bhudevi said, she endures being dug and polluted, yet still gives. The question is whether we honor that gift."

Guddu: "What happened when Varaha finally put her down?"

Dadi: "When He placed her gently among the stars, Varaha promised: "Whenever you sink under the weight of adharma - when unrighteousness becomes too heavy - I shall return. In whatever form needed, I shall always lift you up.""

Guddu: "He'll come back if we need him?"

Dadi: "That promise echoes through every age. The Divine forever supports what sustains life. Whenever evil becomes too powerful, whenever dharma is drowning, help arrives."

Guddu: "In different forms each time?"

Dadi: "Whatever form is needed. A fish, a turtle, a boar, a lion-man, a dwarf, a warrior, a prince... The form changes, but the love remains the same."

Guddu: "Dadi, I love this story. The big powerful boar being so gentle."

Dadi: "That's the lesson, beta. True strength doesn't need to be harsh. The mightiest tusks can cradle tenderly. The deepest power can speak softly. Real protectors are fierce when needed and gentle always."

Guddu: "I want to be like that - strong but kind."

Dadi: "Then remember Varaha. When you have power, use it to lift others up, not push them down. Hold carefully what is precious. And always be willing to dive into the depths to rescue what needs saving."

Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi. I'll dream of being lifted on gentle tusks."

Dadi: "Sweet dreams, mera bachcha. May you always be lifted by love."
