Kashi Vishwanath - Why Shiva Stays Here
— Kashi Khanda of Skanda Purana; Shiva Purana —
Dadi: "Guddu beta, remember how I told you Kashi is Lord Shiva's favorite city? Tonight I'll tell you why he can never leave it!"
Guddu: "Why, Dadi? Did something make him stay?"
Dadi: "It's a tricky story, beta! Once upon a time, Shiva left Kashi for some reason. The gods were very worried - what would happen to such a sacred place without its lord?"
Guddu: "Oh no! Did the city become un-sacred?"
Dadi: "Not exactly. Lord Brahma found a solution. He discovered a sage named Ripunjay doing intense penance in the forests near Kashi. This sage was actually of royal blood!"
Guddu: "A prince who became a sage?"
Dadi: "Yes! Brahma made him the king of Kashi, renaming him Divodasa. But here's the tricky part - Brahma gave him a special boon: "No god or divine being can enter your kingdom. You will rule without any interference.""
Guddu: "Wait, that means even Shiva couldn't go back?"
Dadi: "Exactly! King Divodasa ruled so perfectly that nobody could find anything wrong with his kingdom. His subjects were happy, justice was fair, crops grew well. It was a perfect kingdom!"
Guddu: "But Shiva wanted to go home!"
Dadi: "Very much so! But because of Brahma's boon, he couldn't. So Shiva started sending agents to find some flaw, some mistake in Divodasa's rule that would reduce the king's power."
Guddu: "Like spies?"
Dadi: "More like trouble-makers! First, Shiva sent the Yoginis - magical female beings. But when they reached Kashi, they loved it so much that they forgot their mission and stayed!"
Guddu: "That backfired!"
Dadi: "(laughing) Then Shiva sent Surya, the Sun God himself! But even Surya fell in love with Kashi. "I can't find anything wrong here," he said, and abandoned his mission."
Guddu: "Everyone loves Kashi!"
Dadi: "Even Lord Brahma himself tried! He arranged a special ritual with ten sacred horses. If the ritual failed, Divodasa's power would break. But the king performed it perfectly, and all the horses returned safely!"
Guddu: "Poor Shiva! He just wanted to go home!"
Dadi: "Finally, Shiva sent his own trusted aide Nikumbha with Ganesha's help. Through clever tricks, they managed to convince King Divodasa that the ultimate achievement for a king was not ruling, but seeking liberation - moksha."
Guddu: "Did the king give up his throne?"
Dadi: "He realized that even a perfect kingdom is temporary, beta. True fulfillment comes from spiritual growth. When Divodasa decided to seek moksha, he invited Lord Shiva back to bless him and his city!"
Guddu: "So everyone won?"
Dadi: "Everyone won! Divodasa got spiritual liberation. And Shiva returned to his beloved Kashi - this time, he made sure never to leave again. That's why he established himself as the Vishwanath - the Lord of the Universe - right here in Kashi!"
Guddu: "Vishwanath means Lord of the Universe?"
Dadi: "Yes! "Vishwa" means universe, "Nath" means lord. The famous Kashi Vishwanath temple marks the spot where Shiva settled permanently. People say he whispers the mantra of liberation into the ears of anyone who passes away there."
Guddu: "He personally helps people?"
Dadi: "That's the legend, beta. Shiva loved this city so much that he made it his eternal home. He doesn't just LIVE there - he IS there. Every stone, every step, every drop of the Ganga holds his presence."
Guddu: "Why did Shiva love Kashi so much, Dadi?"
Dadi: "Perhaps because his devotees loved it so much. You see, beta, God goes where love calls him. Millions of people have prayed in Kashi, millions have found peace there. All that devotion makes the place sacred, and that sacredness attracts divine presence."
Guddu: "So love brings God?"
Dadi: "Always, beta. Wherever there is sincere devotion, God finds a way to be there. You don't need a temple - your heart can be Kashi if it's filled with enough love."
Guddu: "I'll make my heart into Kashi!"
Dadi: "That's the most beautiful temple of all, beta. Now sleep, and may Vishwanath bless your dreams!"
