Kamadevas Restoration at Kamakhya
— Kamakhya Temple Tradition —
Dadi: "Guddu, do you know who the god of love is?"
Guddu: "Like Cupid with the bow and arrow?"
Dadi: "Yes, but in our tradition he's called Kamadeva. And unlike Cupid, Kamadeva once got completely destroyed - burned to ashes!"
Guddu: "The god of LOVE was destroyed?!"
Dadi: "By Lord Shiva's third eye. Let me tell you what happened."
Guddu: "Why would Shiva destroy the god of love?"
Dadi: "After Sati, Shiva's first wife, died in her father Daksha's fire, Shiva was shattered. He stopped participating in the universe. He just meditated, lost in grief. For ages."
Guddu: "He was mourning?"
Dadi: "So deeply that creation itself started suffering. Nothing was being created. The universe needed Shiva to engage again. The gods had an idea - send Kamadeva to shoot Shiva with a love arrow, make him fall in love again!"
Guddu: "That seems risky!"
Dadi: "It was! When Kamadeva disturbed Shiva's meditation, Shiva opened his third eye in fury and burned Kamadeva to ashes instantly."
Guddu: "He destroyed him for doing what the gods asked?!"
Dadi: "Kamadeva's wife, Rati, was devastated. She fell at Shiva's feet, weeping. "My husband only did what he was told! Please, bring him back!""
Guddu: "Did Shiva feel bad?"
Dadi: "Shiva is actually full of love himself. He took pity on Rati and agreed to restore Kamadeva - but with a condition."
Guddu: "What condition?"
Dadi: ""The yoni of my beloved Sati fell at Nilachal hill (now called Kamakhya). Go there, establish a temple for the Goddess, spread her name among all people. Only then will Kamadeva regain his beauty.""
Guddu: "He had to build a temple first?"
Dadi: "Kamadeva (or what remained of him) and Rati went to Nilachal. There, Kamadeva performed intense penance, worshipping the Goddess at the place where Sati's yoni had fallen."
Guddu: "How long did he pray?"
Dadi: "For years and years! Finally, the Goddess was pleased. She blessed Kamadeva, and he regained his original form - as beautiful as before."
Guddu: "The god of love was reborn!"
Dadi: "And to fulfill his promise, Kamadeva built a magnificent temple there with the help of Vishwakarma, the divine architect. That temple became the famous Kamakhya Temple."
Guddu: "So the temple is connected to the god of love?"
Dadi: "That's why the whole region is called "Kamarupa" - form of Kama (love/desire). And the Goddess there is called "Kamakhya" - the one worshipped by Kama."
Guddu: "So Shiva destroyed love, but then helped it be reborn?"
Dadi: "*(nodding)* The cycle is important, beta. Sometimes things must be destroyed before they can be restored in a new form. Kamadeva was the same god of love before and after - but the experience changed him. He had humility now."
Guddu: "He learned from being burned?"
Dadi: "Even gods learn through suffering. Kamadeva thought his power could affect anyone - even Shiva. He learned that some beings are beyond such influence. Destruction taught him what privilege couldn't."
Guddu: "What's the lesson for us, Dadi?"
Dadi: "That even when we lose everything - are "burned to ashes" by life's difficulties - restoration is possible. But it often requires devotion, patience, and fulfilling our duties first. Kamadeva didn't just get his form back. He earned it through service and worship."
Guddu: "Hard times can lead to better times?"
Dadi: "If we respond with humility and devotion instead of bitterness. That's the path from destruction to restoration."
Guddu: "I'll remember that when things feel burnt to ashes."
Dadi: "There's always a Kamakhya - a place of rebirth - waiting for those who keep praying."
