Gorakhnath Rescues His Guru from Delusion
— Nath Sampradaya legends —
Dadi: "Guddu, usually it's the teacher who saves the student, right?"
Guddu: "Yes, Dadi. Teachers know more!"
Dadi: "But what if a teacher forgot everything he knew? What if he got lost in worldly pleasures and forgot he was ever wise? Could a student save a teacher?"
Guddu: "I never thought about that!"
Dadi: "Tonight's story is about Gorakhnath, a devoted student who rescued his own guru from a magical trap."
Guddu: "His guru got trapped? How?"
Dadi: "Matsyendranath was one of the greatest yogis who ever lived. He had spent his whole life practicing meditation and learning secrets directly from Lord Shiva. But when he grew old, something happened."
Guddu: "What happened?"
Dadi: "Maya - the power of illusion - tempted him. Using his yogic powers, Matsyendranath entered the body of a king who had just died. Instead of continuing his spiritual path, he started living as a king!"
Guddu: "A yogi became a king?"
Dadi: "He forgot he was ever a yogi. He enjoyed the palace, the riches, the comforts. He lived with the queen and even had children. Years passed, and he never remembered his true self."
Guddu: "Didn't anyone notice their guru was missing?"
Dadi: "Gorakhnath noticed. He was Matsyendranath's most devoted student. Other disciples mocked him - "Your guru has fallen! He's living it up in a palace while you sit here!" But Gorakhnath didn't give up."
Guddu: "What did he do?"
Dadi: "He came up with a clever plan. He disguised himself as a drummer and joined the entertainment at the palace during a celebration. Some say he even turned himself into a bee to sneak in!"
Guddu: "A bee! That's clever!"
Dadi: "Once inside, Gorakhnath began to play his drum. But this wasn't ordinary drumming. He played ancient rhythms and chanted mystical mantras - the same mantras his guru had taught him long ago."
Guddu: "Did the guru recognize them?"
Dadi: "Slowly, slowly, something stirred in the king's heart. He didn't know why, but these sounds felt familiar. Memories began to surface - memories of meditation, of forests, of a life devoted to something greater than palaces."
Guddu: "He was waking up!"
Dadi: "Gorakhnath stayed at the palace as a servant, constantly reminding his guru of who he really was. Finally, Matsyendranath agreed to leave everything behind."
Guddu: "He remembered he was a yogi!"
Dadi: "But there was one more test. As they left the palace, Matsyendranath grabbed a bag of gold coins. "These will be useful for charity along the way," he said."
Guddu: "What's wrong with that?"
Dadi: "Gorakhnath saw that his guru was still attached to material things. A true yogi needs nothing. So he took the coins and threw them into a well!"
Guddu: "The guru must have been upset!"
Dadi: "Then Gorakhnath did something amazing. Using his own yogic powers, he pointed at a nearby mountain and turned the entire thing into solid gold."
Guddu: "A mountain of gold?!"
Dadi: "He said to his guru, "If I can create a mountain of gold, why would I worry about a few coins? And why should you? We have something far more valuable than gold - the path of yoga.""
Guddu: "That's a powerful lesson!"
Dadi: "Matsyendranath was finally, completely awake. He understood what had happened - he had been lost in illusion for years, and his devoted student had saved him."
Guddu: "Dadi, this is strange. The student saved the teacher."
Dadi: "*nods* Sometimes wisdom works in mysterious ways. Gorakhnath's love and devotion were so pure that he could see what his guru could not see. And he had the courage to help his teacher, even when the teacher had lost his way."
Guddu: "Can that happen to anyone? Forgetting who you really are?"
Dadi: "It happens all the time, beta. We get so caught up in comforts and pleasures that we forget our higher purpose. That's why we need people who love us enough to remind us - teachers, parents, friends."
Guddu: "Like how you remind me to study even when I want to play video games all day?"
Dadi: "*laughs* Exactly like that! You're already understanding maya! Now, let this story remind you - stay true to who you are. And if you ever see someone you love forgetting their path, be like Gorakhnath. Help them remember."
Guddu: "I will, Dadi. Thank you for this story."
