Prajapati - Da Da Da Teaching
— Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 5.2 —
Dadi**: Guddu beta, what if I told you that the same word can mean completely different things to different people?
Guddu**: Like how "bank" can mean a place for money or the side of a river?
Dadi**: Exactly! Tonight's story is about how the Creator, Prajapati, gave the same teaching to three different groups - and each understood it perfectly for their own needs.
Guddu**: The same teaching?
Dadi**: Just one syllable: "Da." But it transformed three types of beings in three different ways!
Guddu**: Tell me!
Dadi**: Long ago, three groups lived as students with Prajapati, the Creator. The gods (devas), humans, and demons (asuras) all studied with him, seeking wisdom.
Guddu**: Gods, humans, and demons all together?
Dadi**: In those days, yes. They all wanted to learn how to live properly. When their studies were complete, each group came to Prajapati for final advice.
Guddu**: What did he tell them?
Dadi**: To each group, he said just one thing: "Da." Then he asked, "Have you understood?"
Guddu**: That's all? Just "Da"?
Dadi**: The gods heard "Da" and said, "Yes, we understand! You mean DAMYATA - restrain yourself. Control your senses."
Guddu**: Why did they hear that?
Dadi**: Because, beta, the gods' weakness is their love of pleasure! Living in heaven with every comfort, they tend to indulge too much. They needed to learn self-control. For them, "Da" meant discipline.
Guddu**: What about the humans?
Dadi**: When humans asked for teaching, Prajapati again said, "Da." And humans replied, "Yes! You mean DATTA - give generously. Share what you have."
Guddu**: Why did they understand it that way?
Dadi**: Because humans are naturally greedy, beta! Our weakness is hoarding more than we need while others go without. We needed to learn generosity. For us, "Da" meant charity.
Guddu**: And the demons?
Dadi**: When demons came, Prajapati said the same "Da." And demons answered, "Of course! You mean DAYADHVAM - have compassion. Be merciful."
Guddu**: Demons need to learn compassion?
Dadi**: Yes! Demons are naturally cruel and violent. Their weakness is lack of mercy. For them, "Da" meant developing kindness.
Guddu**: So the same sound meant three different things?
Dadi**: Because each group heard what they needed to hear! The teaching was like a mirror - it showed each listener their own flaw and its remedy.
Guddu**: That's so clever!
Dadi**: Prajapati was the wisest teacher. He didn't give long lectures. He let each student discover their own truth from a single syllable.
Guddu**: Which teaching is for me?
Dadi**: Well, beta, you're human! So "Datta" - give, share, be generous - is your traditional teaching. But honestly, we all need all three.
Guddu**: All three?
Dadi**: Sometimes we need self-control like the gods. Sometimes we need generosity. Sometimes we need compassion. The wise person cultivates all three.
Guddu**: Damyata, Datta, Dayadhvam. Control, Give, Be Merciful.
Dadi**: You've got it! This teaching is over three thousand years old, from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. And it's still perfectly relevant today.
Guddu**: Three words from one syllable!
Dadi**: The best teachings are simple. "Da" contains everything. Now, when you hear thunder - some people say that's Prajapati's voice repeating his teaching to the world.
Guddu**: Really?! Thunder says "Da, Da, Da"?
Dadi**: Listen next time it storms, beta. Maybe you'll hear the Creator reminding us: control yourself, give generously, be compassionate.
Guddu**: I will! Goodnight, Dadi!
Dadi**: Goodnight, beta. Da Da Da!
