Amarnath - Ice Lingam and Secret of Immortality
— Nilamata Purana; Rajatarangini; Amarnath Mahatmya —
Dadi: "Beta Guddu, have you ever wondered if there's a place on earth where you can hear the secret of living forever?"
Guddu: "The secret of immortality? Is that really possible, Dadi?"
Dadi: "Well, there's a sacred cave high in the Himalayas where Lord Shiva once shared this secret. It's called the Amarnath Cave."
Guddu: "A cave in the mountains! What's special about it?"
Dadi: "High up in the freezing mountains, at almost 4,000 meters above sea level, there's a cave where every year, an ice formation appears. It looks like a Shivalinga - the sacred symbol of Lord Shiva. And this ice grows and shrinks with the moon!"
Guddu: "Ice that follows the moon? That's magical!"
Dadi: "It does seem magical, beta. The ice reaches its biggest size on the full moon and slowly melts after that. Scientists say it's because of dripping water freezing in a certain way, but devotees see something deeper - a sign of Lord Shiva himself."
Guddu: "Why is this cave so important? What happened there?"
Dadi: "Let me tell you the legend. One day, Goddess Parvati noticed that Lord Shiva wore a necklace made of skulls. She asked him, "Why do you wear that strange garland?""
Guddu: "A necklace of skulls? That sounds scary!"
Dadi: "Shiva explained: "Each skull represents one of your past lives, my dear. Every time you die and are born again, I add another skull to remember you.""
Guddu: "So Parvati had many lives?"
Dadi: "Yes, beta. And this troubled her. She asked, "Why must I die again and again while you remain immortal? What is your secret?""
Guddu: "Good question! What did Shiva say?"
Dadi: "Shiva agreed to tell her the Amar Katha - the story of immortality. But he said, "This is the most sacred knowledge. No other living being can hear it. We must find a place where we are completely alone.""
Guddu: "So they went to the cave?"
Dadi: "First, Shiva made sure to leave everything behind. At Pahalgam, he left his bull Nandi. At Chandanwari, he released the Moon from his hair. At a sacred lake, he released his serpent. He left Lord Ganesha at one mountain. And at Panjtarni, he left behind all five elements - earth, water, air, fire, and sky!"
Guddu: "He left everything so they'd be truly alone!"
Dadi: "Exactly. When they reached the cave, Shiva even created a special fire called Kalagni to make sure no creature was nearby. Then he began telling Parvati the deepest secrets of existence."
Guddu: "So no one heard the secret?"
Dadi: "Here's the magical twist, beta! Unknown to Shiva, there was an egg hidden under a deerskin in that cave. As Shiva spoke the sacred knowledge, a pair of doves hatched from that egg!"
Guddu: "The doves heard everything?"
Dadi: "They did! And because they heard the secret of immortality, those doves became immortal themselves. People say those same two doves still live in the Amarnath cave today!"
Guddu: "Really? The same doves from that day?"
Dadi: "That's what devotees believe. Many pilgrims report seeing a pair of white doves in or near the cave. Seeing them is considered a very blessed sign."
Guddu: "I want to see those doves someday!"
Dadi: "Many people make that pilgrimage every year, beta. In July and August, hundreds of thousands of devotees climb through difficult mountain paths to reach the cave and see the ice Shivalinga."
Guddu: "It must be a hard journey."
Dadi: "Very hard. The mountains are cold and the path is steep. But people believe that making this difficult journey with devotion brings great blessings. The hardship itself becomes part of the worship."
Guddu: "Dadi, what was the actual secret Shiva told? The secret of immortality?"
Dadi: "Ah, beta, that's the beautiful mystery. The full secret is said to be so sacred that it shouldn't be spoken casually. But what we do know is this: true immortality isn't about the body living forever. It's about realizing that our soul - the atman - was never born and will never die. We are already immortal; we just need to realize it."
Guddu: "So the secret isn't about living forever physically?"
Dadi: "No, beta. Physical bodies come and go, like Parvati's many lives. But the consciousness within - that is eternal. When we truly understand this, death loses its power over us. That's what the sages say."
Guddu: "That's deep, Dadi. I need to think about that."
Dadi: "Take your time, beta. Even Parvati, the goddess herself, needed to hear it explained by Shiva. These things unfold slowly in the heart. For now, just remember: there's a sacred cave in the Himalayas, with an ice Shivalinga and maybe two immortal doves, where the greatest secret was once shared."
Guddu: "I'll remember, Dadi. Maybe someday I can go there too."
Dadi: "Maybe someday, beta. Maybe someday."
