King Ambarisha and Durvasa
— Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 9, Chapters 4-5 —
Dadi: "Guddu beta, tonight I'll tell you about a king who was so devoted that even God's most powerful weapon protected him!"
Guddu: "A weapon protecting someone? Usually weapons attack!"
Dadi: "The Sudarshana Chakra - Lord Vishnu's spinning disc - is special. And King Ambarisha was special too. Though he ruled seven continents and had immense wealth, he treated it all like a dream."
Guddu: "Like it wasn't real?"
Dadi: "He knew it could all disappear, beta. So instead of being attached to his riches, he dedicated everything to Lord Vishnu. His mind was always on God's feet, his words always praised God, his hands always served the temple."
Guddu: "Did he ever make mistakes?"
Dadi: "He was careful not to! For a whole year, he and his queen fasted on sacred days - Ekadashi and Dvadashi. At the end, he performed elaborate worship and donated sixty crore cows to scholars!"
Guddu: "Sixty CRORE cows?!"
Dadi: "Lord Vishnu was so pleased that He gave Ambarisha a special gift - the power to command the Sudarshana Chakra."
Guddu: "The spinning disc! Cool!"
Dadi: "Now, here's where the story gets tense. On a sacred day, just as Ambarisha was about to break his fast at the exact right time, guess who showed up uninvited?"
Guddu: "Who?"
Dadi: "The sage Durvasa - famous for his terrible temper! Ambarisha welcomed him respectfully and asked him to dine. Durvasa agreed but said, "Let me purify myself at the river first.""
Guddu: "That sounds okay..."
Dadi: "But Durvasa took forever! The deadline for breaking the fast was approaching. If Ambarisha ate before his guest, he'd insult Durvasa. If he didn't eat in time, he'd break his sacred vow."
Guddu: "Impossible situation!"
Dadi: "His advisors found a solution: "Drink water - it counts as both eating and not eating." So Ambarisha sipped water and waited."
Guddu: "Smart!"
Dadi: "But when Durvasa returned and learned what happened, he exploded with rage! He tore hair from his head and created a blazing demon to kill Ambarisha!"
Guddu: "Oh no!"
Dadi: "But Ambarisha didn't even flinch. He stood calm, trusting in God. And the Sudarshana Chakra rose automatically, burned the demon to ashes, and started chasing Durvasa!"
Guddu: "The weapon chased the sage?!"
Dadi: "Across sky, earth, caves, and seas! Durvasa ran to Brahma - "I can't help against Vishnu's weapon." He ran to Shiva - same answer. Finally, he reached Lord Vishnu himself."
Guddu: "What did Vishnu say?"
Dadi: "This is powerful, beta. Vishnu said, "I am controlled by my devotees. They know nothing apart from Me, and I know nothing apart from them. You've become your own enemy. Go back to Ambarisha - only he can help you.""
Guddu: "The person Durvasa tried to kill?"
Dadi: "Yes! Durvasa returned and fell at Ambarisha's feet. And here's the most amazing part - Ambarisha had been waiting the whole year! He refused to complete his fast until Durvasa returned safely!"
Guddu: "A whole YEAR just on water?!"
Dadi: "Because he couldn't enjoy food while another being suffered because of him. When Durvasa touched his feet, Ambarisha felt ashamed - he prayed to the Sudarshana Chakra to forgive the sage!"
Guddu: "Even though Durvasa tried to kill him?"
Dadi: "That's true devotion, beta. No revenge, no anger - just concern for another's wellbeing. The chakra stopped, Durvasa was freed, and he praised Ambarisha with all his heart."
Guddu: "Durvasa became grateful?"
Dadi: "He said, "Today I've learned what it means to be a true devotee." Ambarisha later gave his kingdom to his sons and retired to the forest to meditate."
Guddu: "Dadi, the story teaches that God protects those who trust Him completely?"
Dadi: "Yes, but also something deeper - the best devotees don't just love God, they love everyone, even their enemies. Ambarisha could have let Durvasa suffer. Instead, he fasted for a year for someone who tried to murder him."
Guddu: "That's... wow."
Dadi: "That's devotion, beta. Now sleep, and may you develop such a generous heart!"
