Hanuman Learns from Surya - The Student Who Ran Backward
— Various Puranas, Hanuman Nataka —
Dadi: "Guddu, imagine your teacher says he can only teach you while driving a car that never stops. What would you do?"
Guddu: "That's impossible! How can you learn if the teacher keeps moving?"
Dadi: "Young Hanuman faced exactly this problem. His mother Anjana told him to learn from Surya, the Sun God. "He sees everything from his chariot in the sky. He knows all knowledge. Ask him to be your teacher.""
Guddu: "Did Surya agree?"
Dadi: "Surya was kind but explained the problem. "Child, I would gladly teach you, but I cannot stop my chariot. From dawn to dusk, I must travel across the sky. I have no time to sit with a student.""
Guddu: "What did Hanuman say?"
Dadi: ""Then I will travel with you!""
Guddu: "But if he's behind the chariot, his back would be to Surya..."
Dadi: "Exactly what Surya pointed out! "A student must always face the teacher. If you travel with me, you'll have your back to me." And Hanuman found a solution."
Guddu: "What?"
Dadi: "He made himself enormous - one foot on the eastern mountains, one foot on the western - and flew BACKWARD in front of Surya's chariot. Always facing his teacher while matching the Sun's movement across the sky!"
Guddu: "He flew backward all day?"
Dadi: "From dawn to dusk! And in that single day, he learned everything - all the Vedas, all the Upanishads, grammar, logic, sciences, arts of war, secrets of yoga. Everything a mind could hold."
Guddu: "In ONE day?"
Dadi: "A day for Surya is a lifetime of teaching for anyone else. And Hanuman was... motivated."
Guddu: "*laughs* I wish I could learn like that!"
Dadi: "When the lessons were complete, Hanuman asked what guru-dakshina - the traditional fee - Surya wanted. And here's the beautiful part."
Guddu: "What did Surya ask for?"
Dadi: ""Keep my son Sugriva safe. That is all I ask. There will come a time when he needs a friend. Be that friend.""
Guddu: "Sugriva - the monkey king?"
Dadi: "Yes! Years later, when Sugriva was exiled by his brother Vali, hiding on a mountain in fear and despair, Hanuman stayed by his side. And when Rama came looking for allies..."
Guddu: "Hanuman was there to introduce them!"
Dadi: "The promise to Surya had connected him to his destiny. The teacher who sees everything asked for exactly what would lead Hanuman to Rama."
Guddu: "Surya knew the future!"
Dadi: "He sees everything from his chariot, remember? The guru-dakshina wasn't just a fee - it was a direction that would take Hanuman exactly where he needed to go."
Guddu: "Dadi, what's the lesson for me?"
Dadi: "Two lessons, beta. First - when obstacles appear, don't complain. Find solutions. Teacher can't stop? You move with him. Must face him? Fly backward. Every problem becomes a creative opportunity."
Guddu: "And the second lesson?"
Dadi: "A true teacher doesn't just teach - they position you for your destiny. Surya knew Hanuman's future. The seemingly simple request to protect Sugriva would lead Hanuman to the purpose of his entire life."
Guddu: "So when my teachers give me advice, maybe they see something I can't see yet?"
Dadi: "*hugs him* Exactly. Trust the guidance, even when you don't understand it fully. The connection between the lesson and your future may only become clear much later."
Guddu: "I'll remember the student who flew backward."
Dadi: "And became the wisest of all vanaras. Now, my eager student, time for sleep."
Guddu: "Goodnight, Dadi!"
