Mirabai Poison Becomes Nectar
— Sant Parampara - Mirabai —
Dadi**: "Guddu, I told you Mirabai's enemies tried to poison her. Let me tell you the full story of that miracle."
Guddu**: "She drank poison and survived!"
Dadi**: "More than survived - the poison became nectar! This happened when the Rana - the king - had had enough of Mira's defiance."
Guddu**: "Why was he so angry?"
Dadi**: "Mira refused to worship the family deity. She sang publicly. She met with saints of all castes. She embarrassed the royal family constantly. So they decided she had to die."
Guddu**: "What did they do?"
Dadi**: "The Rana mixed deadly poison in a cup and sent it to Mira with a trusted servant. He told her it was charanamrit - the sacred water from washing Krishna's feet - or prasad from the temple."
Guddu**: "That's cruel - pretending it was holy!"
Dadi**: "One story says Lord Krishna himself appeared to Mira and warned her. He said there was poison in the cup but told her to drink it anyway - he would protect her."
Guddu**: "He told her to drink poison?"
Dadi**: "Testing her faith. Mira, completely trusting her beloved Krishna, finished her worship and drank the entire cup. She hardly noticed what she was eating or drinking in her devotional absorption."
Guddu**: "What happened?"
Dadi**: "The poison transformed! Instead of killing her, it became nectar. Mira continued sitting before her Lord with a peaceful smile. The servant ran back to report the miracle."
Guddu**: "The poison just... changed?"
Dadi**: "One beautiful account says that the stone idol of Krishna changed color - it turned green, as if HE had drunk the poison for her! Everyone witnessed this."
Guddu**: "Like when Shiva drank the poison during the ocean churning!"
Dadi**: "Exactly! Mira even said to the idol: 'The moment You drank just a little of the poison, Your form changed.' She understood - Krishna had taken the poison himself."
Guddu**: "He protected her by suffering for her?"
Dadi**: "That's what love does. Mira herself sang about it: 'When your devotees repeat Your name, poison becomes nectar - so the Puranas say. Today I had experience of it.'"
Guddu**: "There's a connection to Rakhi too, right?"
Dadi**: "Some say this is why people tie rakhi on Krishna's murti! According to legend, when Mira knew about the poison, she tied a sacred thread on Krishna's idol, trusting in His protection. He honored that thread."
Guddu**: "Faith can transform even poison."
Dadi**: "That's the deepest teaching. The poison didn't disappear - it transformed. In the same way, troubles in life don't always disappear. But with faith, they transform from poison into medicine, from harm into healing."
Guddu**: "The situation stays the same but changes."
Dadi**: "Beautifully said! The cup was the same cup. The liquid looked the same. But through Mira's devotion and Krishna's grace, its nature changed completely. Our problems can do the same."
Guddu**: "I'll remember this when something feels like poison in my life."
Dadi**: "Good boy. Hold onto faith, and watch transformation happen. Now sleep, and may all poison in your path become nectar."
