Agastya Subdues Vindhyachal

Skanda Purana, Kashi Khanda

Dadi: "Beta, you know what's more powerful than the mightiest mountain or the fiercest demon? Wisdom and humility, combined with patience."

Guddu: "I thought the biggest mountains are the most powerful, Dadi!"

Dadi: "Let me tell you another angle of the Vindhya story, beta. This time, focus not on Agastya's cleverness, but on what we learn about jealousy."

Guddu: "Okay, Dadi! I'm listening."

Dadi: "Vindhyachal - that's another name for the Vindhya mountain - was happy once. He was a beautiful, important mountain range. But then Narada visited him and mentioned how the sun and moon circled around Mount Meru."

Guddu: "And that made Vindhya jealous?"

Dadi: "Very jealous! He thought, "Why should Meru be more important than me? I'll grow so tall that even the sun will notice me!" And so he began rising higher and higher."

Guddu: "But Dadi, that's silly! Even if he grew tall, the sun and moon weren't going to circle around him!"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta! That's what jealousy does - it makes us think foolishly. Vindhya couldn't become what Meru was, but in trying, he hurt everyone. The sun couldn't move properly, and the whole world suffered."

Guddu: "So jealousy hurt innocent people?"

Dadi: "Always, beta. Our jealousy never hurts just us - it affects everyone around us. The crops died, people suffered, animals were confused without proper day and night."

Guddu: "And then Agastya came?"

Dadi: "Yes. Now, here's something beautiful. When Agastya approached, Vindhya suddenly realized something. He saw a sage - small in size, but so powerful in spirit that the mountain trembled. And Vindhya understood: "True greatness isn't about size. This tiny sage is greater than I could ever be, no matter how tall I grow.""

Guddu: "So Vindhya learned his lesson?"

Dadi: "In a way, yes. He bowed before Agastya voluntarily - not because he was forced, but because he finally saw what real greatness looks like. Agastya didn't need to be tall or impressive. His inner light was enough."

Guddu: "And then Vindhya stayed bowed forever?"

Dadi: "He promised to stay low until Agastya returned. And since Agastya made his home in the south and never came back... well, you know the rest!"

Guddu: "But Dadi, that sounds a bit sad for Vindhya. He's been waiting forever!"

Dadi: "True, beta. But think about it differently. Maybe Vindhya isn't just "waiting" anymore. Maybe, after all these ages, he has found peace in being humble. He serves India now by connecting the north and south, by providing homes for millions of creatures. He's doing important work in his humility."

Guddu: "So he found a better purpose?"

Dadi: "I think so. Before, he wanted to be noticed for being tall. Now, he's loved for being useful. Before, he wanted glory. Now, he has genuine importance."

Guddu: "That's beautiful, Dadi. Like how being helpful is better than being famous!"

Dadi: "Exactly, beta! The Vindhyas are home to countless plants and animals. Rivers flow from them. Tribes live in their forests. The mountains serve so many - not by being the tallest, but by being where they are, doing what they do."

Guddu: "And what about jealousy? How do we stop feeling jealous?"

Dadi: "That's a great question. First, remember that everyone has their own special role. Mount Meru has its purpose, Vindhya has his. You have yours, your friends have theirs. Instead of wanting what others have, focus on becoming the best at what you're meant to be."

Guddu: "So if my friend is better at math, I shouldn't feel bad - I should just be the best at what I'm good at?"

Dadi: "Perfect understanding, beta! Maybe you're better at art, or running, or being kind. We're not all meant to be the same. The world needs different mountains - some tall, some wide, some small."

Guddu: "I like that, Dadi. I'll try not to be jealous like Vindhya."

Dadi: "And remember, beta - even Vindhya learned eventually. It's never too late to let go of jealousy and find peace in who you really are. Now, shall we look at a map and find the Vindhya mountains?"

Guddu: "Yes! I want to see where the humble mountain is!"
