Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga
रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत | रजः सत्त्वं तमश्चैव तमः सत्त्वं रजस्तथा ||१०||
rajas tamaś cābhibhūya sattvaṁ bhavati bhārata | rajaḥ sattvaṁ tamaś caiva tamaḥ sattvaṁ rajas tathā ||10||
In essence: The gunas constantly compete - sattva prevails over rajas and tamas; rajas over sattva and tamas; tamas over sattva and rajas.
A conversation between a seeker and guide to help you feel this verse deeply
Sadhak-Guru Dialogue
Sadhak: "This sounds exhausting - a constant battle inside me. Is there never any peace?"
Guru: "Peace exists, but not in any guna dominating permanently. Peace exists in the witness who watches the battle without taking sides."
Sadhak: "But I experience these shifts constantly. After meditation I feel peaceful, then someone annoys me and I'm reactive, then I feel tired and just want to veg out."
Guru: "You've just described sattva dominant, then rajas rising, then tamas emerging. This is the natural rhythm. The question is: who noticed these shifts?"
Sadhak: "I noticed them."
Guru: "Was 'you' - the noticer - also shifting? Or did the same awareness witness all three states?"
Sadhak: "The same awareness, I think. The states changed but the knowing of them remained."
Guru: "That unchanging knowing is beyond all gunas. The states battle; awareness watches. Learn to identify with the watcher rather than any particular state, and you'll find the peace that doesn't depend on sattva winning."

🌅 Daily Practice
Observe which guna won the overnight battle. Some mornings begin in sattva - alert, clear, ready. Others in rajas - mind already racing. Others in tamas - heavy, resistant. Don't try to force a shift yet; just notice who's currently dominant in this moment's governance of your body-mind.
Track the guna-shifts throughout your day. Perhaps after lunch, tamas overpowers. Perhaps in intense conversation, rajas rises. Perhaps in nature, sattva returns. Notice these transitions happening. Who is it that notices? Can you find the unchanging witness behind the changing states?
Review the day's guna-battle. How many shifts occurred? What triggered them? Which guna dominated most? This isn't to judge but to understand. The more familiar you become with this inner weather system, the less identified you become with any particular storm.
