Why Must You Leave, Krishna?
A conversation between Uddhava and Krishna
Context
The Yadava dynasty has been cursed to perish. Krishna prepares to leave the Earth after over a hundred years. His dearest friend and devotee Uddhava approaches Him in the palace at Dwaraka, heart heavy with the knowledge of what is to come.
The Dialogue
Uddhava: "My Lord, my heart trembles at what I have witnessed. The brahmanas' curse upon our clan, the evil omens appearing everywhere, Your own subtle smile when You heard the newsâas if You had been waiting for this moment. Tell me truly, do You intend to leave us?"
Krishna: "Dear Uddhava, you who have been with Me since our youth, you who understand My heart better than mostâyes, the time has come. This body, this form that has walked among men for over a hundred years, will soon return to My eternal abode."
Uddhava: "But why, Krishna? Why must You go? The world needs You. I need You. Without Your presence, what will become of dharma? What will become of those who love You?"
Krishna: "Look around you, dear friend. See how even the Yadavas, blessed to be My own clan, have become intoxicated with pride. They mock sages, they quarrel among themselves, they have forgotten humility. When even those closest to the Divine forget their true nature, it is time for a great cleansing."
Uddhava: "I have seen it, Lord. The young men dressed Samba as a pregnant woman to mock the sages. The curse that followedâthat an iron bolt would destroy the dynastyâit haunts my dreams. But surely You could prevent all this?"
Krishna: "I could, Uddhava. With a single thought, I could undo any curse, reverse any fate. But that is not the way of dharma. Everything that takes birth must also meet its end. The Yadava clan has fulfilled its purposeâto establish righteousness and to demonstrate that even divine association cannot save those who abandon humility."
Uddhava: "Then at least take me with You! I cannot bear to live in a world without Your lotus feet to shelter me. My life has meaning only in Your service."
Krishna: "And that is precisely why you must stay, dear one. After I depart, who will carry this wisdom? Who will teach humanity that the body is temporary but the soul eternal? You must live, Uddhava. You must teach. The knowledge I have given you is not for you alone."
Uddhava: "How can I teach what I barely understand? When I look at You, I see infinity clothed in human form. When You leave, I will see only emptiness everywhere."
Krishna: "That emptiness you fear is an illusion. I am never absent from anywhere or anyone. I am the essence of all that exists. When you see the sun rise, see Me. When you hear the wind through the trees, hear My voice. When you feel love stir in any heart, know that I am there. My physical departure is only the setting of one sunâbut I am the light that never fades."
Uddhava: "My Lord, these words are nectar, yet they burn me. To know that this form I have loved, these eyes that have blessed me, this smile that has been my reason for breathingâthat all this will be gone... how am I to bear it?"
Krishna: "You will bear it because you are stronger than you know. You will bear it because your love for Me is not dependent on this form. And you will bear it because I will never truly leave you. Stay close to Me in these final days, Uddhava. Let Me give you the highest knowledgeâeverything I taught Arjuna on the battlefield, and more. This is My gift to you, and through you, to all future seekers."
⨠Key Lesson
Physical forms are temporary, but divine presence is eternal. True devotees serve not just in the presence of the Lord, but carry His message forward into the world. Separation becomes service.
